The Rt Hon Dr Stephen Ladyman MP, the Minister responsible for shipping, visited the AOS chaplaincy team in Sheerness Docks, part of the Port of Medway, on 14th September.
The Minister met members of the crew from various Eastern European countries, and was taken on a guided tour of the ship by its Polish captain.
The Minister was also taken to the communications room opened recently by AOS inside a spare port building where seafarers can make use of the three telephone booths to contact loved ones back home during their short time ashore.

For the second time, the Minister for Finance has ignored the shipping industry and this has brought outraged reaction with the Secretary of the Chamber of Shipping saying that he was disgusted that the Government seemed to lack understanding of the industry.

Croatian Tourism Minister Božidar Kalmeta and private shipping companies signed,on Friday, contracts on government subsidies for the construction of seven passenger ships and for the overhaul of another eight ships, which will cost some HRK 3 million.

With the limited financial resources of small countries like Vanuatu it is difficult to meet all the minimum standards for port state control requirements applicable in the international shipping industry.
Nevertheless Vanuatu is grateful, said Jimmy, for organizations such as the Tokyo MOU which in many ways provided assistance to the small nations in order to help them meet their different port state control obligations.

 Investment worth 100 thousand crore in the offing for shipping sector: Balu
Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R. Balu today said there would be an investment to the tune of Rs 100,000 crore for 387 projects in the port and ship building sectors in the coming years.
Pointing out that the Department of Shipping was already implementing various projects under the National Maritime Development Programme, he said at present, there were around 276 projects for the port sector and 11 for the ship sector.
According to a study by the Department of Shipping, the traffic to be handled by the Indian ports in the year 2013-14 would be to the tune of 1225 MT as against the traffic handled in year 2005-06, which was around 573 MT of which the share of Non-Major ports was around 150 MT.

The group discussed at length the draft of the cruise shipping policy formulated on the basis of recommendations given by the five working groups which were constituted to formulate various aspects of the policy concerning taxation, immigration, connectivity, identification of ports to be developed for cruise shipping and custom issues.
It was also decided that measures would be taken to explore the possibilities of promotion of cruise shipping in the eastern part of the country.
