Environment Canada is not in a position to be able to specify and commit to a specific timeline for the start and completion of the clean-up of the Randle Reef sediments as the final implementation of this undertaking still depends upon a number of contingencies.
In this regard, Environment Canada does not think it is in the public interest to begin an investigation that may take several years of effort, involving several hundreds of thousands of dollars, with questionable results and which would not in and of itself lead to the remediation of the Randle Reef site.

Liberal environment critic John Godfrey noted that the Liberals announced their $10-billion Project Green in April 2005, and were beginning to implement it at the time of their defeat.
NDP environment critic Nathan Cullen said he was shown parts of Ambrose's speech in advance, and they included a reference to the government's collaboration with the NDP.

OTTAWA, Canada (06/19/06) -- Canada's Minister of the Environment, Rona Ambrose, has in consultation with the the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, Loyola Hearn, proposed adding 42 new animals, plants and fish to the list of species protected under the Species at Risk Act (SARA).
The Minister of the Environment is recommending that 32 terrestrial and 10 aquatic species be listed.

Canadians taking part in a public consultation on Canada's participation in WTO services negotiations have cautioned against blanket liberalisation while others warned of the need to differentiate trade liberalisation and deregulation, and ensure that Canadian interests are fully protected, a report released on 7 February by Canadian International Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew said.
Canada's Ambassador to the WTO, Sergio Marchi, is currently overseeing negotiations in services as Chair of the WTO Council for Trade in Services.
