The Minister of Defence (Ministre de la Défense) is the French government cabinet member charged with running the military of France.
A "Secretary of State for War" was one of the four specialised secretaries of state established in France in 1589.
After the Second World War, the War Ministry merged with the Ministry of the Marine, with a Minister of National Defence (from 1974 simply Minister of Defence) directing the entire military.

According to the White Paper on defence, France now has to be capable of dealing with crises of limited scope and managing and forestalling crises that are long, of variable intensity and whose theatres of operation may be far from France’s national territory.
Internationally, France was instrumental in the revision of the 1980 Convention governing the use of certain conventional weapons, which resulted in the strengthening of Protocol II which relates to use and transfer of landmines.
France is now engaged (1996-2002) in a radical reform of its armed forces, moving from a strength of 548,000 (including conscripts) to one of 440,000 totally professional forces able to meet the new defence requirements.

Defence Minister George Fernandes has declared that before the end of the month, the service headquarters will be integrated into the defence ministry.
Defence personnel, who spend years working in a command system where orders are given or received and implemented faithfully, do not realise how difficult the process is when an entire cabinet has to decide, when so many ministries and people are involved," he added.
Officials at the defence ministry and the three services are to meet on Friday, January 8, to discuss the modalities of integration and restructuring.

The parliamentary standing committee on defence has pulled up the defence ministry for the delay in acquiring crucial weapon-locating radars which Pakistan possesses and which destroyed Indian gun positions during the Kargil conflict.
According to the chairman of the standing committee on defence, Dr Laxminarayan Pandey, it is ''inexcusable that the ministry of defence failed to acquire the radar''.
The ministry of defence in reply to a question said that, in February 1995, requests were made to five manufacturers for the supply of weapon-locating radars for conducting trials.

FRANCE and Britain will be able to rely on each other's military fuel, food and ammunition suppliers on joint operations after an agreement signed at the Anglo-French summit yesterday.
Some sources within the Ministry of Defence pointed out that such a measure of agreement was missing even in Kosovo where France and Britain still had their differences even though they were part of the same coalition.

Prime Minister Lionel Jospin announced the deployment of France's only aircraft carrier on Wednesday, saying it would help stop bin Laden and others of his al Qaeda network from escaping landlocked Aghanistan by sea via a third country.
France has also announced the dispatch of Mirage 2000 fighter bombers, but has yet to find a suitable base for them in central Asia.
The Defence Ministry has said six such planes and two refuelling aircraft would be sent once a base was found.
