As word came that a large Japanese force was sailing to attempt a disruption of the operation, Minneapolis rejoined TF 58 to screen the carriers during the Battle of the Philippine Sea, 19 and 20 June.
Continuing to alternate carrier screening and bombardment duties in the Philippines, Minneapolis was on the scene for the attack and landings at Lingayen Gulf, Luzon, 4 to 18 January 1945 and the landings on Bataan and Corregidor 13 to 18 February.

As the Japanese launched the three‑pronged naval attack which would develop into the Battle for Leyte Gulf, Minneapolis was assigned 24 October to Adm. Jesse B. Oldendorf’s bombardment group with other cruisers and older battleships.

One of the most decorated U.S. Navy cruisers during World War II in the Pacific, the heavy cruiser Minneapolis (CA-36) was awarded 16 battle stars for actions ranging from the Gilbert and Marshall Islands raid early in 1942 to the assault on Okinawa in April 1945.
ARTHUR D. Damage control allowed the hurt Minneapolis to limp at 3 knots into Sasapi Harbor, Tulagi, where she was moored to palm trees and tree stumps and camouflaged with foliage.
The Minneapolis began her voyage home for final repairs on 7 January 1943 but soon experienced problems that delayed her departure until 10 February, when, in the company of other damaged warships, the cruiser began a 9.5-knot voyage to Pearl Harbor.

She immediately launched searchplanes to hunt for the Japanese fleet, and at mid-morning headed south to rendezvous with USS Indianapolis (CA 35) and USS Enterprise (CV 6) task forces to conduct a search southwest of Oahu until returning Pearl Harbor 18 December.
Lexington sailed next day to raid Japanese forces on Jaluit to relieve pressure on Wake; these orders were canceled 20 December, and she was directed to cover the USS Saratoga force in reinforcing Wake.

That engagement, the first in history where neither side came within surface gun range of the other, effectively stopped the Japanese thrust at strategic Port Moresby, but resulted in the first loss of an American aircraft carrier in the war—Lexington, sunk on 8 May 1942.
Fitch together with Captain Sherman and Lexington's executive officer Commander, visited "Lady Lex"'s wounded in Minneapolis' sickbay—an action that "contributed in no small measure to the patients' well-being." For the leadership he exhibited during the Battle of the Coral Sea, Fitch was awarded his first Distinguished Service Medal.
He again broke his flag in his former flagship, Saratoga, but the task group formed around that ship arrived too late to take part in the pivotal Battle of Midway.

Leander was badly damaged by a torpedo in the opening moments of the action, then the failure to promptly identify the destroyers of the Japanese escort force allowed them to reach a position to launch torpedoes that blew up the destroyer USS Gwin (DD 433) and damaged the cruisers USS Honolulu and USS St. Louis.

Thus when in 1928, the construction of cruisers CA 32 — 36 was granted, the most immediate demand, as made by the General Board was “any weight which might be found available be used in the increase of protection, primarily of the magazines”.
Significant additional plating could be provided there both to protect the magazine and the ammo lifts, and to mount a plotting room within the armored part near the magazines.
Further additions were made to the design, including armored gun turrets as opposed to the mere mounts covering by steel in the previous classes.

1 CA, 1 CL, 12 DD This class, all commissioned between January and December 1943, particpated in all the actions in the last years of World War II.
When, after a fashion, it was revived, as the "heavy cruiser" under the regime of the Treaty Cruisers, with CA hull numbers, these were considered cruisers proper and were given city names like other cruisers.

Although correcting many flaws of previous classes of CA's, in some areas they were still weak.
Armor, for one, was woefully inadequate; in many important areas (bridge, turrents, fire control directors) would only barely defeat a destoryer's five inch guns, and some of those areas would be hard pressed to defeat that.
San Francisco was severely damaged at 1st Naval Battle of Guadalcanal and New Orleans and Minneapolis were damaged at Tasssaforonga.

The carrier arrived at Pearl Harbor on 7 January 1944, and, after a brief period of training, sailed from Pearl Harbor on 19 January with light carriers, USS Langley (CV 27) and USS Princeton (CVL 23), to support the drive in the Marshalls.
