For the past two years, Minneapolis has ranked No.1 on the list of America’s most literate cities (followed closely, both years, by Seattle), and, according to Kit Hadley, at least a small part of that stellar reputation is due to the city’s libraries.

And this despite the fact that the Minneapolis libraries are “probably the system in a major city that has had the worst cutbacks—we have had to cut back our hours enormously,” according to Hadley.

It's fairly well known among librarians and frequent library patrons that public libraries do not keep most of their books for very many years.
The proceeds admittedly don't amount to all that much--books cost anywhere from 25¢ to $10 or so, but at least the library recoups a little of it's investment--and it allows people who otherwise may not be able to afford to buy books to provide books at home for themselves and their children.
