By this point hardcore was fractured into several subgenres with sometimes competing political, ideological, and artistic viewpoints.
The Minneapolis hardcore and punk scene has a strong DIY ethic stemming from rides on that little yellow bus.

In the ’80s, the hardcore scene revolved around Washington, D.C., which is only fitting considering the intense politics involved in hardcore music, whether it be radically liberal or radically conservative (the latter giving rise to skinhead culture and Oi punks).
Minneapolis hardcore band Hüsker Dü’s singers Bob Mould and Grant Hart poured their anger into the songs, but realized that they wanted more expression in the lyrics.
Zen Arcade, a masterpiece of a punk album, was released in 1984 and was one of the first hardcore records to bare the band’s soul and address not only political, but very personal issues in the songs.

These songs are great sweaty angry fun awesome smart fast hardcore anthems about "guns at my school" and "gilligan's island" and a "strange week" and what it's like to be "tired of doing things," but the overall kickass quotient is DESTROYED by the hideous recording.
As for Husker Du, they were one of the earliest hardcore bands, but God this album would have beeen SO MUCH BETTER had they recorded it in a studio and not forced me to drink five shots of whiskey before reviewing it.
This may not be hardcore, but it's aggressively delivered rock music, split pretty much 70/30 or 65/35 between happy fastness and forlornities of various tempoes.

Scarlet Slipping was also featured on the debut CD The Birth Of Tragedy by Minneapolis' hardcore/metal band Song of Zarathustra.
