Minnehaha Creek is a short tributary of the Mississippi River located in Hennepin County, Minnesota that extends from Lake Minnetonka in the west and flows east for 22 miles (35 km).
The creek might have been unremarkable except for the 53 foot (16 m) Minnehaha Falls located near its confluence with the Mississippi.
A small train station officially named Minnehaha Depot but also known as "the Princess Depot" was built in 1875; it was a stop on the Milwaukee Road railroad and provided easy access to the park from Fort Snelling, downtown Minneapolis, and downtown St.

At the overlook situated in the main car park there is a good view of Minnehaha creek and some of the stone foundations that are the only remains of the great Glen Echo Chautauqua amphitheater.
Glen Echo's popularity again changed Minnehaha Creek; in 1956 the park owners removed the termite infested, condemned "Midway" to extend the parking lot and installed a large metal pipe (called a culvert) for the creek to flow through.

Minnehaha Creek is a valued recreational and esthetic resource for local neighborhoods as it flows through parks and urban areas from Lake Minnetonka to where it joins with the Mississippi River.
In 2003 we initiated a study to determine the biological diversity of non-biting midges (Diptera: Chironomidae) in the creek.
A longer-term goal of this research project is to develop an identification guide to Chironomidae of Minnehaha Creek that includes both original drawings and digital photographs of all species collected in the stream.

Minnehaha Creek is the only outlet of Lake Minnetonka, and the lake was not discovered until in the year 1822 a young drummer boy from Fort Snelling, Joseph Brown, and his young friend, John Snelling, son of the commander, went into the Indian Country down Minnehaha Creek in their canoe.
The creek became known as "Brown's Creek" and later the creek was renamed '"Minnehaha Creek." Thirty years later, a period of rapid settlement began, and crude boats went up the creek to Lake Minnetonka.
Initially, Lynnhurst Park was mostly marsh, and, in the 1880s, formed the northwesterly end of a millpond created by the Richfield Mills dam on Minnehaha Creek at Lyndale Avenue.
