I have read that a daguerreotype of these falls inspired Longfellow in his writing of "Hiawatha." We can visit the falls today, but we can't see it the way it appeared at the time this photo was taken unless we look at this image.
The appearance of the falls has changed and modern photographs (including daguerreotypes) do not capture the luminance and motion of the water as does the 19th century daguerreotype.
