Baptist churches, while asserting their local autonomy, “self-rule,” or freedom from outside governance, nonetheless often choose to cooperate locally in groups known as associations.
Associations are understood as communities of faith through which churches express their spiritual kinship and mutual concern.
The association is the oldest denominational body among Baptists, dating back to the 17th century in England, and to the founding of the Philadelphia Association in America in 1707.

 Association will stretch past borders
Traditionally, associations are comprised of churches of similar faith and practice within a defined, and usually small, geographic territory inside the borders of one state.
The new association has been prompted by ostracism several out-of-state moderate churches have felt from their local associations and state conventions, as well as some Texas churches' frustrations with their own associations, Mason said.
Planners intend for the new association to be strongly affiliated with and supportive of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, Mason stressed.

 Landmarkism - BaptistBoard.com
Actually, Landmarkism is the Baptist form of Campbellism; it developed parallel with, at the same time as, and as a reaction to the Campbellite (Church of Christ) movement, which claimed to have the only real baptism in the only true church.
Though there are many variations among Landmark Baptists, the general idea of Landmarkism is that the New Testament churches were baptistic in doctrine, that such churches have existed in uninterupted succession from the time of Christ, and that only such churches have a valid ministry and valid baptism.
Today, Landmark Baptist beliefs are found primarily in the American Baptist Association and the Baptist Missionary Association, and to a lesser degree within the Baptist Bible Fellowship and various independent Baptist movements.

THE DOWN GRADE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
I never sought from the Association the consideration of “a credal basis”; but on the contrary, when offered that my resignation might stand over till such a consideration had taken place, I assured the brethren that what I had done was final, and did not depend upon their action in the matter of a creed.
The attempt, therefore, to obtain a basis of union in the Association, whatever may be thought of it, should be viewed as a matter altogether apart from me, for so indeed it has been.
Baptist ministers are pastors of separate churches, which may associate with other churches, or cease to associate with them, as they judge best; but the minister and the church are not dependent upon the associations they may choose or decline.

During that long pastorate, he led the Minnesota Baptist Association out of the Northern Baptist Convention and led his own church out of the Conservative Baptist Association; he founded Central Baptist Theological Seminary in 1956 and Pillsbury Baptist College in 1957.
Baptists have a disconcerting history of being repeatedly sucked into newly fabricated "orthodoxies" which are alien to their historic heritage.
I think it can in part be traced to the spirit of anti-intellectualism which has pervaded Baptists historically, and which has led to a failure among Baptists generally to study their own history and the doctrinal views of Baptists historically.
