The Minnesota River Basin once was a prairie and wetland landscape that supported a thriving population of birds and bison.
This standard is frequently violated in the Minnesota River between Morton and Ft. Snelling (Table 1), and in tributaries throughout the basin.
Streams and rivers in the Minnesota River Basin have an average phosphorus concentration of 0.25 mg/L, and this level is frequently exceeded in the Minnesota River near Ft. Snelling and between Courtland and St. Peter (Table 1).

The Blue Earth River Watershed is located in the south central Minnesota Counties of Blue Earth, Brown, Cottonwood, Faribault, Freeborn, Jackson, Le Sueur, Martin, Steele, Waseca, and Watonwan and in the north central Iowa counties of Emmet, Kossuth, and Winnebago.
The Blue Earth River accounts for 46% of the flow of the Minnesota River at Mankato and has a total drainage area of 3,486 square miles, 3,135 of which are in Minnesota (including 831 square miles within the Watonwan River Subwatershed and 1,089 square miles within the Le Sueur River Subwatershed) and 351 in Iowa.
The Blue Earth River and its major tributaries, in particular, are having a large impact on the Minnesota River which in turn is contributing large amounts of pollution to the Mississippi River.

Carved out of glacial Lake Minnesota and the glacial River Warren, the Minnesota River is the longest tributary in Minnesota that enters into the Mississippi River.
The Minnesota River was a major route for fur traders and was known to explorers as far back as the late 1600's when Pierre Le Sueur undertook an expedition to locate copper.
The Dakota people had named the river Minnesota which means "sky-like water." When the government formed a new territory that would include the river valley and the surrounding land they called it Minnesota Territory after the river.

I asked someone at the grand opening if Three Rivers Park District plans to open more mountain bike trails, and he said it would be difficult because park reserves are supposed to leave 80% of the land area undeveloped.

The North Star State: Perhaps the most common nickname for Minnesota, "The North Star State" evolved from the State Motto L'Etoile du Nord or "Star of the North." The State Motto appears on the Great Seal of Minnesota and the State Flag.
