Minnesota is the largest state by land area in the Midwestern United States and is in the sub-region known as the Upper Midwest.
Minnesota Territory was carved out of Iowa Territory on March 3, 1849, but it was not coextensive with the present state, since the area included what later became the territory of Dakota (which later still became the states of North Dakota and South Dakota).
Minnesota is the northernmost of the 48 contiguous states (Alaska reaches significantly farther north), reaching to 49° 23' 04" north latitude, due to a small piece of the state known as the Northwest Angle.

The struggle to obtain a seat was a severe one, and to his influence are we indebted for a territorial organization in March, 1849, with liberal appropriations for organizing and sustaining its government.
The interests of the territory have been safely guarded, and he has done much to advance the superstructure to its present beauteous proportions, the foundations of which was laid by other hands.
We are quite sure that no territory ever had so precocious an infancy, and are equally sure, that no executive officers have done more to produce so desirable a result, than have the first two governors of Minnesota.

The act establishing the Territory of Minnesota authorized the Surveyor General to run and mark the northern boundary of Iowa, a boundary that would later be used as a baseline for the surveys west of the Mississippi.
Concern for this year were; the con-tinued inability to survey the boundary lines between Minnesota and Iowa and between Minnesota and Wisconsin, the difficulties of survey because of wet weather, the continued illegal logging operations, and the inspection of the work of the deputy surveyors in the field.
The earliest surveys in Minnesota Territory, carried out under the direction of the Surveyor General of Wisconsin and Iowa, were restricted to the area between the St. Croix and Mississippi Rivers that had been ceded in 1837.

This is the second of two papers describing the survey of Minnesota while administered by the Surveyor General of Wisconsin and Iowa.
The starting point of the boundary between Iowa and Minnesota was established late in 1849 but, although appropriations for running the line were made in 1851, it was not completed until 1852.

The "Land of 10,000 Lakes," Minnesota got its nickname because there are more than 12,000 lakes throughout the state.
Its name comes from the Dakota (Sioux) word for the Minnesota River's "sky-tinted waters." The Minnesota Territory was formed in 1849 from what had been part of the Northwest Territory, and Minnesota joined the Union in 1858.

In June, 1834, the Back Hawk Purchase was made a part of Michigan Territory, and in September following, the Legislature of that Territory erected two counties west of the Mississippi - Dubuque and Des Moines - the dividing line being drawn westward from the foot of Rock Island, and these counties were partially organized.
Territorially speaking, Fayette county was originally one of the largest counties ever organized.
It included within its limits all of the present state of Minnesota west of the Mississippi river, extending on the north to the British dominions, and included all of the territory of the Dakotas east of the Missouri river, except a small tract in the southeast corner.
