The P*Funk Review first put up the MinnieRiperton page about a year and a half ago and since that time I have received many letters from MinnieRiperton fans all over the world asking me questions about Minnie, her music and her family.
Bellow are Maya's responses to the bulk of the questions that were submitted to her and also her response to the questions that she did not choose to answer at this time.
I guess the other thing to let people know is that every year here in LA on or around my Mom's birthday we have a run that raises money for breast cancer research and helps to raise awareness in the fl community as well as in anyone else who shows up.
Minnie Julia Riperton (November 8, 1947 - July 12, 1979) was a soul singer from Chicago, Illinois, most noted for her abilities in the whistle register and her 1975 hit single "Lovin' You".
Riperton had released a debut album that won critical praise but, frustrated with her record company's listless promotion effort, was preparing, at age 22, for semi-retirement Florida.
The photo is an indelible reminder of the sweet soulfulmusic that Riperton produced from her early days as a back-burner artist at Chess to her stint as a vocalist in the vastly underrated psychedelic soul band Rotary Connection, and finally, her career as one of the most distinctive voices of the 1970s.
Riperton's debut solo release was further complicated by the sale of Chess to the GRT corporation, thus her recording fell through corporate cracks.
In 1968, Riperton was installed as the lead vocalist of the psychedelic soul band the Rotary Connection, which debuted that year with a self-titled LP on Cadet Concepts; the singles "Amen" and "Lady Jane" found a home on underground FM radio, but the group failed to make much of an impression on mainstream outlets.
By this time, however, commercial woes were the least of Riperton's concerns -- diagnosed with breast cancer, she underwent a mastectomy in 1976, later becoming a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society and earning a Society Courage Award from then-President Jimmy Carter.
Riperton continued performing despite her declining condition, with 1979's Minnie the final record completed during her lifetime -- she died in L.A. on July 12 of that year.
MinnieRiperton was sort of the Boomer version of Yma Sumac, best known for her ultra-high vocal range.
Riperton's voice is mostly used for freak-out effect (the fade of "V.I.P."), though then again, almost everything here is used for freak-out effect (dig the "square" voiceovers in "Let Them Talk").
The first Riperton solo album didn't exactly set the charts on fire, so the followup was released under the Rotary Connection name though Riperton sings most of the leads and Rudolph wrote most of the songs (usually with Stepney).
Minnie Julia Riperton was a Chicago native who, as a young girl studying at Lincoln Center, eventually planned to become an opera singer.
Minnie became a member of Wonder's backup singers, known as Wonderlove, and was featured on his Fullfillingness' First Finale album (most notably on "Creepin'").
MinnieRiperton'smusic and loving spirit live on in artists like Teena Marie, whose own albums have featured help from Minnie's husband and kids.
Minnie began her professional career with the local Chess label in 1961 when she was just 14, singing with a neighborhood group, The Gems.
Although Minnie found the achievements of that gold single impossible to produce, her Epic album "Adventures In Paradise" also went gold and added greatly to her reputation, as did the ambition song cycle "Stay In Love" despite disappointing sales.
MinnieRiperton (8 November1947 - 12 July1979) will be forever associated in the public's mind with her #1 pop hit, Lovin' You, from 1975.
She seemed like a fresh new talent when Epic Records signed her the previous year, but Riperton had brought an amazingly rich recording history to the label, one that included almost a decade of stunning earlier recordings for the legendary Chess label.
Riperton was born on the South Side of Chicago on November 8, 1947, and was the youngest of eight children.
Minnie Street Bed and Breakfast INN is only three short blocks from downtown Fairbanks, the Golden Heart city of Alaska, and approximately 4 miles from Fairbanks International airport.
"Minnie Street BandB INN in Fairbanks proves that my opinion of many rating systems for travel accommodations is right on the button.
Based on my own rating system ---created via much, much travel in my 74 years, Minnie Street BandB is a 10 on a scale of 1 to 10.
