Topic: Mino da Fiesole

  Biography
According to Vasari he was a pupil of Desiderio da Settignano, but this has been doubted, as Desiderio was about the same age - possibly a year or so younger.
Whereas Desiderio's are all of women, Mino's are almost all of men; the earliest - that of Piero de Medici (Bargello, Florence, 1453) - is the first dated portrait bust of the Renaissance.
Mino also worked as a tomb sculptor, but much of his work in this field has been altered or destroyed or is of uncertain attribution because he collaborated with other sculptors.

 Fiesole
Near Fiesole the Vandals and Suevi under Radagaisus were defeated (405) by hunger rather than by the troops of Stilicho.
In 1010 and 1025 Fiesole was sacked by the Florentines, and its leading families obliged to take up their residence in Florence.
His baptismal name was Guido, but, entering the convent of the Reformed Dominicans at Fiesole, he took the name of Giovanni in religion; that of Angelico was afterwards given to him in allusion to the beauty and purity of his works.

Villa Medici Fiesole -- Recommendations and Resources   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Fiesole is a town and ''comune'' (township) of Firenze province in the Italian region of Tuscany, 43°49N 11°18E, on a famously scenic height 346 m (1140 ft) above Florence, 8 km (5 mi) NE of that city.
Fiesole was probably founded in the 9th-8th century BC, as it was an important member of the Etruscan confederacy, but the first recorded mention on the town dates to 283 BC when the town, then known as Faesulae, was conquered by the Romans.
Fiesole fell to the Germanic hordes in AD 405 and was an independent town for several centuries afterwards, though always overshadowed by Florence, before being conquered by the Florentines in 1125.

Artist: Mino di Giovanni (1429-84) was born and trained in the ancient Roman hill town of Fiesole in Tuscany.
Mino sculpted monuments, tabernacles and busts, and was famous enough to be employed in Rome on the tomb of Pope Paul II in St. Peter's.
Da Fiesole even clothes his subject, not in the heavy tunic of a medieval Florentine, but in a Roman toga, flowing and tied at the shoulder, emulating the dress of a Cicero or a Brutus in the ancient busts newly revered at that time.

 City of Fiesole, Italy
The so-called "Fiesole stelae" date back as far as the late 6th century B.C. However finds from the Villanovan culture of the early iron age and the age of copper and of bronze have also been unearthed.
The territory of the Roman Municipium of Fiesole must have extended prevalently to the north of the Arno while the territory of the "colonia" of Florence must have lain above all to the south of the river.
Occupied by the Ostrogoths and the Byzantines, Fiesole from the 6th century on was the site of a Lombard settlement as documented by the remains of a necropolis.

Mino has cut the figure of Justice free from a slab of white marble and isolated her against a dark background.
Formally and symbolically, Justice recalls the monumental relief of Minerva visible to Mino in the quattrocento and still extant on the walls of the Forum Transitorium in Rome [ILLUSTRATION FOR FIGURE 12 OMITTED].(57) Minerva, the pagan goddess of wisdom and justice, is a perfect model for a figure of Justice.(58)

Mino da Fiesole (1429-1484), Florentine sculptor, did not meet with Vasari 's approval.
Nevertheless he received important commissions in Naples and in Rome, including commissions from the Medici for portrait busts of Giovanni and Piero de' Medici, and commissions for the tombs of Bernardo Giugni and Count Ugo of Tuscany in the Badia, Florence.
At Works, 4.280 Ruskin cites Mino as one of those who show 'intense truth, tenderness and power', in contrast with the work of Canova and Bandinelli.

Portrait Of A Priest - Mino Da Fiesole
All Florentine sculptors of the fifteenth century delighted in portraiture and Mino da Fiesole, one of the most appreciated among them, began his career by making portrait-busts, from which he passed to the larger and more monumental works for which he is famous.
A considerable proportion of his important sculptures are monuments for great prelates and nobles, of which a number still exist in the churches of Florence and Rome.
The bust is regarded as an unquestioned work of Mino's and has been illustrated and described as such by Wilhelm Bode in his Denkmaler der Renaissance Sculptur Toscanas, under "Mino da Fiesole," Plate 395.

The Young Saint John Baptist - Mino Da Fiesole
Almost every artist evolves a type of face which he repeats throughout his work and it is interesting to trace between the two sculptures by Mino da Fiesole in the Altman bequest similarities in general conception and in detail, even though one is a portrait and the other an imaginative presentation of a sacred personage.
Despite the fact that age is rep-resented in the bust of a priest and youth in the head of Saint John, both faces have the same pointed oval outline, the same sensitive nose, and the same round eyes with lids overlapping at the corners.
The bust was, until recently, the property of the Conte Rasponi Spinelli of Florence.

The history of the commissioning of these tombs and their position within Mino da Fiesole's career highlight their importance as a pair.
Typical of Mino's work, the individual elements are more decorative than strictly architectonic.
Some of these, such as the various moldings on the arch and the volutes used for supports on the bier and the sarcophagus, derive from prevailing quattrocento conventions.(11) Others are more particular to Mino da Fiesole's own work, such as the marked preference for fluted borders and floral patterns.
