Minolta - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On January 19, 2006, Konica Minolta announced that they were leaving the camera and photo business [1] and that they would sell a portion of its SLR camera business to Sony as part of its move to pull completely out of the business of selling cameras and photographic film.
In the 1960s Minolta introduced its SR and later SRT (for SR with through-the-lens metering) series 35mm SLR cameras which are widely regarded as some of the most innovative single lens reflex (SLR) cameras of the era.
In 1977, Minolta introduced the XD-11, the first multi-mode 35 mm compact SLR system camera is considered by many to be the best manual-focus 35mm SLR Minolta ever produced, and the last serious attempt by Minolta to enter the professional and semi-professional 35mm SLR market until the Maxxum 9 in 1998.

 Konica Minolta A2 Review
Since these five cameras all use the same chip, and most have fairly similarly configured lenses, it is very interesting to have a look at how these cameras differ, not only in their design, features and construction, but also in the image quality that they are able to obtain.
The Minolta hot-shoe design is indeed superior to a standard one, but it's a real pain not to be able to use accessories, or a less expensive flash unit.
Minolta indicates that a set of six rechargeable AA batteries will give about half the shooting power of the dedicated lithiums.

However, in 1981 - Minolta released a midrange SLR camera which had many industry observers' eyebrows raised because the camera came with an entirely different concept and has reverted back to basic where priority set on user friendliness and ease of operation, it was an instant success.
Commercially, it was a tremendous success for Minolta and it also signified the rebirth of another dominant force in 35mm market place as Minolta continued to spring surprises years that followed.
Minolta X-700's aperture-priority AE mode lets you control the depth of field but still maintain AE control of stepless shutter speeds fine-tuned for proper exposure with light metered up to the instant of exposure.

 MINOLTA SLR LENS MOUNTS
Minolta lenses are the longest running series of SLR lens-camera compatabilities -- 1958 to the present.
Minolta was able to avoid this whole problem of "stop-down" metering because they had designed most of their lenses, from the beginning, to have the aperture ring next to the camera body.
All Minolta had to do was make a minor modification to the f-stop ring on their lenses to tell the meter what the f-stop was set at.

MINOLTA VIEWFINDER CAMERAS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
This approach was destined to be used later Minolta SLR cameras, such as the SR-3, while other SLR cameras, such as the Olympus OM-1 and the Nikkormat FT's opted to keep the shutter speed dial around the lens.
Some suggest that Minolta decided to put their energies into SLR cameras, like the SR-2 of 1958, but Minolta continued to make top-end rangefinder cameras.
Minolta discovered that there just weren't that many people dying to have such a fast shutter speed, and the V camera line died with the V3.

The Minolta X-700 SLR was first marketed in Oct. 1981 and won the European Camera of the Year award (Source: Minolta Corporate History).
Minolta had an extensive line of fixed length and zoom lenses in the 1970s when they were still pursuing the professional market with cameras such as the XK Motor.
The reason it works is because most of Minolta's X bodies (XD, X) take a light reading after stopping down the lens and adjust the shutter speed accordingly.
