Critics distinguish between "round characters" and "flat characters." The former are made up of many personality traits and tend to be complex and both more life-like and believable, while the latter consist of only a few personality traits and tend to be simple and less believable.
The protagonist (main character, sometimes known as the "hero" or the "heroine") of a novel is certain to be a round character; a minor, supporting character in the same novel may be a flat character.
Minor characters, or stock characters, are often the focus of this kind of analysis since they tend to rely more heavily on stereotypes than more central characters.

It can employ characters' emotions and interactions as a means of insight into fundamental value-premises and their dynamics in the realm of existence.
Rothbard's attitude toward Atlas Shrugged demonstrates a contempt for ideas that befits one subscribing to the Naturalist School of Literature, a movement that embraces photographic descriptions of every detail of a novel, no matter how minute and insubstantial to the development of the plot and theme.
The characters of Atlas Shrugged do reflect philosophical values, as they are set in motion in a world not unlike our own, a world where need calculus and statist domination seek to subdue the sovereignty and autonomy of the producers' minds.

I found it interesting to note that the obvious symbolism of the characters in the story does not have to be interpreted to such an extreme as it usually is. The book almost sounds like something that could have been written recently by someone venting about modern politics (and exagerating, of course).
It is generally acknowledged that Atlas Shrugged is more of an application of her Objectivism in a story format than a traditonal novel.
All in all, Atlas Shrugged is a very interesting book, that makes the reader think and think deeply, and which is sometimes dull only in its execution.

I will always remembers a scene in Atlas Shrugged in which a train is about to blow up due to the un-capitalist actions of the company's CEO, but Rand doesn't seem to concerned about the passengers, who she describes one by one as also rather un-capitalist.
Her characters also routinely have sexual encounters that, while supposedly consensual, are about as close to rape as you can get.
They are usually accompanied by some hapless minor characters who only realize the capitalists are right when its too late, as well as a host of unappealing non-capitalists who fuck things up and generally cause mayhem that the capitalists then have to fix.

The story is consistent with Rand's philosophy: all humans should be motivated by their rational self interest, laissez faire capitalism is the only just system, collectivism of all forms is to be rejected, and government should be extremely minimal.
While her heroic characters (Dagny Taggart, Rearden, Galt, and others) may all seem the same, it must be remembered that Rand's philosophy is fully integrated; it offers no contradictions whatsoever.
As Adam Smith, father of modern economics wrote, "It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest." Atlas Shrugged, like most of Rand's philosophy, repeatedly pounds this point home.

Shakespeare, for example, is epitomized for popularizing many archetypal characters, not because he was the first that we know of to write them, but because he defined those roles amongst the backdrop of a complex, social literary landscape.
Thus, the characters stand out as original by contrast, even though many of his characters were based on previously-garnered archetypes (Shakespeare often borrowed from fables, myths and magic to construct and embellish his plays).

When the pitch and time intervals between successive tones is small enough, this apparent motion no longer seems to leap or skip or step.
All that is necessary, as Kimble and Garmezy (1968) explain, is the successive stimulation of spatially separate points on the retina or the basilar membrane, within certain upper limits on the time interval involved (231).
