I wonder how much depends on the way the OC is introduced--on whether we see her from another character's view, from her own point of view, or from that of the author--or if the OC is concentrating her attention, not on herself but on a canon character.
They sound to me like a straitjacket--because maybe the most interesting thing about creating a character is when that character suddenly breaks the bounds of of your expectations and you find yourself writing her in a way you never imagined at the outset.
