The Hudson Review | Brian Phillips
Bloom, whose mental activity we follow closely, looks out on a scene the appearance of which we are left to infer from his thoughts: we do not see what he sees, we do not hear what he hears.
Bloom brings Molly her breakfast in bed, and with it her mail; among the letters there is one from someone called “Boylan,” and Molly pointedly tells Bloom that Boylan is bringing over a new batch of songs for her this afternoon.
Bloom’s mental associations, uncontrollably returning to his painful awareness of Molly; the behavior of the middle-class men in the carriage, with its rude politenesses; the embarrassed equanimity of the humiliated Bloom—all are very finely observed and ring true however little they are embodied in images.

Calvin was the little brother of the strip's main character, and Hobbes was like he is now, a stuffed tiger that came to life in Calvin's imagination.
I had thought they were the funniest characters myself, but I was unsure as to whether they could hold their own strip.
The dialogue was part of it, the backgrounds were part of it, the characters were off-beat...and you need a little space and time to develop that sort of thing.

 MORROW COUNTY, OHIO 1880 HISTORY
The sandstone underlying is apt itself to give a ferruginous character to the springs that issue from it; but most of the springs and wells that give an irony taste derive the iron, as a carbonate, from the drift, gravels and sands with which that part of the county is well supplied.
Among the early settlers of the county were many Englishmen and Yankees who had been used to seeing fine cattle, and, as soon as the pressure of the first years in a new country was removed, they began to look about for means to improve the cattle of their adopted land.
The county is far behind the most of its neighbors, having but nine miles of graveled pike, and that until recently a toll-road, and not a single foot of plank road.

In the midst of the stirring scenes of the Revolutionary War the County of Wayne was organized, and court was held, as the records show, on the second Monday of January, 1780, at Josiah Sasser's, pursuant to the Act of the General Assembly.

A key character in the early years of the strip, Major Bloom was Milo's jingoistic, right-wing grandfather as well as his custodial guardian.
Like most of the strip's original cast of characters, Bloom faded from sight around 1983, though he did appear in the short story "The Great LaRouche Toad-Frog Massacre" in the 1986 book Bloom County Babylon.
Though his voice was heard over the radio in the strip, he was never seen in person, and remained an unseen character.

The novel has many solo parts, and the events seem improvised as the unnamed main character goes from the south to the north, with many ups and downs.
In this lesson, students explore recurring themes of invisibility and jazz by reading excerpts of the novel, writing about major characters, summarizing events, connecting jazz themes with key concepts in the novel and creating new interpretations of the impact of jazz on Invisible Man.
Two examples of rewriting are changing the outcome of a scenario or changing a character's behavior.
