Topic: Minor navies battleships

  United States Navy - dKosopedia
Larger battleships, which were an important part of the U.S. Navy as recently as the Vietnam War, have all been retired, with the last two reserve ships taken out of service in 2005.
Battleships were distinguished by their large naval guns which could be used for ship to ship combat or in support of ground operations.
Much of the Navy's current fleet fits a template set by President Ronald Reagan during the Cold War, which in turn was based on a model of warfare drawn from the Naval battles of World War II modified to fit the new role played by nuclear weapons.

While Japan was permitted fewer battleships than Britain or the United States, her entire battle fleet was concentrated in the Pacific Ocean; The US Navy battleships were divided between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and the Royal Navy's battleships were divided between the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans.
The battleship navies did not stand idly by while new threats evolved, but their actions were limited by treaties and finances.

Battleship was the name given to the most powerfully gun-armed and most heavily armored classes of warships between the 15th and 20th centuries.
Battleships evolved from northern European cogs, and included carracks and galleons in the 16th Century, ships of the line in the 17th and 18th Centuries, broadside ironclads and Pre-Dreadnoughts in the 19th Century, and Dreadnoughts in the 20th Century.
Battleships still in existence as museums include the American USS Massachusetts, North Carolina, Alabama and Texas, the British HMS Mary Rose, Victory and Warrior, the Japanese Mikasa, the Swedish Vasa, the Dutch Buffel and Schorpioen, and the Chilean Huascar.

 21st Century Battleships
Battleships require a crew of 1550 sailors, but this can be reduced to 1200 by removing their old 5-inch guns.
Navy task forces could fire hundreds of harpoon missiles, tomahawk missiles, hellfire missiles and even 5-inch gun projectiles at the target battleship and cause only minor damage.
I explained that the US Navy's reluctance to devote resources to deal with the mine threat should not reflect badly on the battleships, especially since the battleships still fired 1100 rounds while the Navy fired no 5-inch guns from their billion dollar destroyers and cruisers.

Battleship is the name applied to very large, heavily-armoured warships with a main battery consisting of the largest caliber of guns, specifically those ships built from the late 1800s through to the mid-20th century.
The word battleship was coined around 1794 and is a shortened form of line-of-battle ship (otherwise known as ship of the line), which referred to those vessels considered to be large enough to form part of the battle line during the Age of Sail.
The 12-inch (305 mm) mains and 8-inch (200 mm) intermediates were generally used for battleship to battleship combat, while the secondaries (typically 7-inch (178 mm) to 5-inch (127 mm)) were reserved for smaller threats, such as cruisers and the new destroyers.

THE CONCEPT AND RAMIFICATIONS OF THE AMERICAN
The second “Standard Type” battleship design was the USS Pennsylvania (BB-38)--a.k.a “Battleship 1913 and Battleship 1914”--which actually represented a development of a scheme considered for “Battleship 1912.” The Pennsylvania sported four triple, single sleeve turrets, vice Nevada’s two triples and two twins.
Regarding firepower most complaints are minor and center around the use of single sleeves in 14”/45 triple turrets, and reputed dispersion problems with the 14”/50.
Certainly all navies operated under physical and fiscal constraints, but the US Navy was probably uniquely restricted compared to other powers during the dreadnought period.

Navies kept battleships because there was always the risk that ‘if a battleship had managed to come within gun range of a fleet without them, it could in theory destroy that fleet and any operation it was involved in’.
Battleships had had their last hurrah in the Second World War, and from 1945 until the scrapping of the Vanguard in 1960 it is obvious that these ships began to slip from public attention.
