Minor seventh   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The musical interval of a minor seventh the first note (the root or tonic) and the seventh in a minor scale.
A minor seventh in just intonation corresponds to a pitch ratio of 9:5 or 1:1.8, or various other ratios, while in an equal tempered tuning it is a ratio of 1:2
The minor seventh is considered the most dissonant interval after its inversion the Major second, the Major seventh, and the minor second.

 Seventh chord
The seventh chord built on the dominant of a major or harmonic minor scale is a major/minor seventh.
Called the Dominant Seventh because its intervallic relationships occur naturally in the seventh chord built on the dominant scale degree of a given key, the dominant seventh chord was the first to begin to appear regularly in Western music.
While the dominant seventh chord is typically built on the fifth (or dominant) degree of a major scale, the minor seventh chord is built on the second, third, or sixth degree.

Minor seventh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A minor seventh is the smaller of two commonly occurring musical intervals that span seven diatonic scale degrees.
The prefix 'minor' identifies it as being the smaller of the two (by one chromatic semitone), its larger counterpart being a major seventh.
The minor seventh is abbreviated as m7 and its inversion is the major second.

That is, the D minor scale would have a Bb while the dorian has a B. Because it is so similar to the minor scale, it is natural to play this scale over a minor seventh chord.
That is, an E minor scale would have an F# while the phrygian has an F. If you try playing the phrygian scale over a minor seventh chord, you will probably find it more dissonant than the minor scale, because of the lowered second.
The phrygian mode is used occasionally over a minor seventh chord, although often the chord is written as m7b9 as a hint to the improviser that the phrygian scale is to be used.

Notice that a half-diminished seventh can be (and sometimes is) written as it is here, as a minor seventh with flat five.

A seventh chord is a group of four notes which are related by thirds.
Seventh chords are similar to triads but with a fourth note a third above the fifth.

The most common type of seventh chord in classical harmony, however, is the dominant seventh, which is obtained by adding a minor seventh to the major triad built on the fifth note of the major scale, also called the dominant.

 Sonic Glossary: Seventh
The minor seventh is still dissonant when played simultaneously [Example 5], but the dissonance is not quite so intense as that of the major seventh.
This increases the distance from a sixth to a seventh - a dissonant interval.
Note: Having learned about the seventh, you may want also to consult the definition of the Second, since the second is closely related to the seventh (they are in fact the inverse of one another), and the two behave quite similarly.

 Seventh chords
A seventh chord has at least one dissonant interval in it, and therefore is not a stable sonority; in tonal music, a seventh chord will require a resolution.
A fully diminished seventh chord consists of all minor thirds, and is diatonic in a minor key, built on the raised seventh scale degree, as in the harmonic minor scale.
Notice in the V7 chord, there are two dissonant intervals: the minor seventh between the root and the seventh, and the diminished fifth between the third and the seventh.

Called the Dominant Seventh because its intervallic relationships occur naturally in the seventh chord built on the dominant scale degree of a given key (e.g., G7 in the key of C major), the dominant seventh chord was the first to begin to appear regularly in Western music.
The dominant seventh chord is useful to composers because it is a major chord with a very strong sound, that also includes a tritone between the third and seventh of the chord.

Like triads, the names of other notes of the seventh are derived from their interval above the root: the third and the fifth and the seventh.
Seventh chords built upon augmented triads are extremely rare, as are minor triads with a major seventh and major or minor triads with diminished sevenths.
This method also uses a "7" to indicate seventh chords but does not need to specify the type of seventh, since it is assumed that the seventh will be whatever pitch class would normally occur within that key.

The melodic minor scale is the same as the natural minor with the exception that the sixth and seventh tones are raised by a semitone (half step) when the scale is ascending.
The harmonic minor is the same as the natural minor, except that the seventh tone is raised by a semitone (half step) both ascending and descending, e.g.:

So, for example, Em7 is read as "E minor seventh" and is an E-minor chord with a seventh added to it, Ab11 is read as "A-flat eleven" and is an A-flat major chord with an added eleventh, and F#dim is read as "F sharp diminshed" and is a diminshed chord starting on F-sharp.
Seventh chords, by default, are constructed slightly differently and therefore deserve their own discussion.
This "seventh chord as the dominant of a scale" is known as a "dominant seventh" or "major-minor seventh", and the term "seventh chord", if not modified somehow, almost always refers to this chord.

Seventh chords consist of a note added to the top of a major or minor chord.
For example, your basic E chord consists of E, G#, and B. If you add a minor seventh to an E (the minor seventh of E is D), you have an E7 chord.
Major seventh chords are similar to normal seventh chords except they contain a major seventh (five whole steps and one half step) instead of a minor seventh.

MUS 212 Popular Chord Symbols v. Roman Numerals
For diminished structures extending more than a seventh, it is preferable to indicate only the structure of the diminished seventh chord, in terms of half- or fully-diminished, then, use the designation "add 9," "add 11," "add 13," etc. For example, the symbol Cdim9 means a fully diminished seventh chord with an added major ninth.
Bottom line: The 9th and 13th are diatonic to the key (major or minor) unless an indication is given (via flat or sharp) that these pitches are to be altered.
Their structure, however, would be the typical major-minor seventh chord as the basis, and all extended notes (9, 11, 13) would be determined by the key signature.

This chord is called a minor seventh with a flatted fifth, or a ‘minor seven flat five chord for short.

The diminished seventh - with its characteristic rich sound created by a stack of three minor thirds - is the diatonic chord of vii7 in minor keys.
As shown in Example d), a minor vii7 - or diminished seventh chord - has the same sounding interval structure of three stacked minor thirds whatever inversion you use (although one of the intervals is a written augmented second).
In the following examples, the diminished sevenths have an intensifying effect - unlike the example in longer progressions where the diminished seventh is part of a modulation.
