Minot is the fourth largest city in the state and is the trading centre of a large portion of northern North Dakota, southeastern Saskatchewan, and southwestern Manitoba.
Minot was a typical western boom town in its early years, with its share of vice and lawlessness.
Minot voters decided in 1998 to levy a 1% sales tax to go towards the construction of NAWS; it is alleged by some that this tax fund was partially diverted towards economic development purposes.

Minot's Ledge is known as the "I love you" light, named for its 1-4-3 flashing pattern.
What followed was one of the Lighthouse Board's most impressive engineering feats, as "3514 tons of Quincy granite were hewn into 1079 dovetailed blocks." The stones were cut and preassembled on land, then transfered to the ledge for the dangerous 5-year task of raising the new 114-foot lighthouse.
On shore, near Cohasset, is a replica of Minot's lantern, which stands at the spot where the tower's blocks were assembled, and near the keeper's house, which is now a private club.

The first Minot's Ledge Lighthouse was built for about $39,000 between 1847 and 1850, and was lighted for the first time on January 1, 1850.
In 1894, Minot's was given a new optic and a distinctive characteristic 1-4-3 flash.
An attempt to steal the fog bell from Minot's Light was thwarted, and the bell was subsequently acquired by the Cohasset Historical Society.
