The scope of operations grew as the Air Force assigned bombers to Minot in 1961.
The 5th Bomb Wing is the host unit at Minot AFB; its commander is the base commander, and the unit is responsible for all base services, such as the Library, the Officer's Club, etc. The primary mission of the 5th Bomb Wing is to maintain and operate B-52H Stratofortress bombers.
Minot AFB is one of two bases with B-52s, the other is Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana.

Andersen Air Force Base opened as North Field in 1944, and was primarily used as a B-29 staging base in the Pacific during WWII.
As operations diminished in Southeast Asia, HQ Eighth Air Force moved to Barksdale AFB, Louisiana, and the 3d Air Division was reactivated at Andersen on 1 January 1975.
On 1 October 1994, the 633d Air Base Wing was inactivated and the 36th Air Base Wing was activated in keeping with the Air Force Chief of Staff''s policy of keeping the most highly decorated and longest serving Air Force units on active duty.

Minot today, seen from North Hill Minot, population 36,567, is a city located in north central North Dakota, USA.
Minot is the fourth largest city in the state and is the trading centre of a large portion of northern North Dakota, southeastern Saskatchewan, and southwestern Manitoba.

The first permanent Strategic Air Command unit assigned to Minot AFB was the 4136th Strategic Wing in September 1958 and within six months, the 906th Air Refueling Squadron was activated and assigned to the 4136th.
The scope of operations grew as the Air Force assigned the 525th Bombardment Squadron to the 4136th.
As Minot's mission changed, the SAGE center was deactivated in May 1963 and eventually housed numerous base agencies and today is known as the Professional Results In Daily Endeavors Building.

The Strategic Air Command became operational as a tenant unit with the assignment of a KC-135 Air Refueling Squadron and soon was replaced by the 46th Air Refueling Squadron.
The Sault St. Marie Air Defense Sector (SAGE) continued in operation until September 1963 and in January 1964 control of the base was passed from the Air Defense Command to the Strategic Air Command leaving the 410th Bomb Wing as the host unit to date.
The nineteen B-52H's from the 410th Bomb Wing were relocated to Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana and Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota and became part of the 2nd and 5th Bomb Wings.
