The Starfleet Museum - Yorktown Class and Minotaur Class
In June 2158, the M/AM/fusion-powered MINOTAUR fighter (P/A-33) and the M/AM-powered YORKTOWN carrier (CVM-5) were introduced in an attempt to overcome the operational limitations of early M/AM ships by combining the speed and range M/AM-powered warp flight with the maneuverability of high-impulse fighters.
MINOTAUR was approximately 50 meters long and carried a hybrid warp drive system consisting of 10 M/AM power modules and a fusion reactor.
Most MINOTAURs were of the original Mark I type, but 59 were of the Mark II type, whose command hull was lengthened 6 m to accept the improved Python warp missile.

HMS Blake   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The cruiser was host to the Westland Wessex HAS MK3 helicopters of 820 Naval Air Squadron from 1969 until withdrawn from service in 1979, when the ship became the last ship in the Royal Navy to fire a six inch gun.
Due to the number of crew and the increasing obsolescence of guns, she was withdrawn into reserve in 1963.
HMS Blake was the first British ship to be defeated by the United States Navy, when the USS Ranger attacked her during the American War of Independence.

Minotaur class was given because of the extended foreward hammerhead, which gives this class a rather lopsided look and feel to it.

Cruiser Warfare, the most recent game in our Great War at Sea series, is built around the attempt by the German East Asia Cruiser Squadron to steam from its isolated base at Tsingtao in northern China around the world to Germany.
Minotaur, the new flagship of the China Station, was the equal of the German ships on paper, but in an even fight the edge would probably have gone to the crack German crews.
The German cruisers also were much smaller than their British counterparts, coming in at 3,800 tons (4,200 for Emden) compared to 4,800 for Newcastle and 5,200 for Yarmouth.

Fitted with up to date weapons, engines, and two squadrons of fighters and a compliment of shuttle craft, the Minotaur was meant to be the new fast dreadnought of the fleet, but the cost to build the ship made the previous DNF more sensible.
Essentially, a new heavy cruiser is a light cruiser hull armed with the firepower of a heavy cruiser and in the case of the Miranda, perhaps even more.
Upgrades to the Miranda class began in the early 2360's but were quickly haulted in favor of newer ships that were coming on line.

Germany would build a new class of large armored cruiser, and to make up for the lost battleship construction she would build six of the new type.
Minotaur carried four 9.2-inch guns in turrets fore and aft, and ten 7.5-inch guns in single turrets along either broadside.
The German building pattern since 1900 had been to order four or five battleships and two big cruisers in every other fiscal year; as these new cruisers were larger than the last class of battleships there would be no less of a need for steel or labor.

This slower squadron was some distance astern of the battle cruisers and, by reason partly of the smoke of the ships ahead of the enemy vessels and partly of the light to the eastward having become less favourable, difficulty was experienced in seeing the targets, not more than two ships being visible at a time.

Star Trek Minutiae » History of the Earth-Romulan War » Archer Class and Curran Class Patrol Cruisers
Minotaurs were usually carried internally at warp speeds by Yorktown-class carriers and released deep within enemy territory.
However, if a Minotaur were unable to rendezvous with the carrier or if the carrier were destroyed, the Minotaur could return to UE space at low warp speeds using its onboard fusion reactor.
Although Curran was a more powerful attack ship than either Minotaur or Archer, it did not achieve the fame of either of these earlier ships because by the time it was introduced the tide of the war had turned in the UE's favor.

The lead ship of a class of three, she represented the last British armored cruiser design, as the type was superceeded by the considerably more powerful (and expensive) battle cruiser.
Minotaur initially served with the Home Fleet and, in 1910, deployed to the China Station as flagship.
