Sheerness - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sheerness is a town on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent, England.
Sheerness was the focus of an attack by the Dutch navy in June 1667, when 72 hostile ships during the Raid on the Medway compelled the little "sandspit fort", to surrender and landed a force which for a short while occupied the town.
Sheerness was also the site of a Royal Dockyard which, although not as large as those at Chatham and Deptford was still of some importance in Tudor and Stuart England.

The Abbey is the parish church of Minster.
The original village of Minster is clustered around the church at the top of the hill and for hundreds of years the population was concentrated here with the outlying areas covered by thousands of acres of farmland.
Minster Abbey is still regarded as the Mother Church of the Island, in fact until the latter part of the last century, the nearby town of Sheerness was in the parish of Minster.

 School in Focus
Under Bayford's visionary leadership West Minster has become a crucial community hub, pioneering the sort of collaborative multi-agency work regarded as necessary for delivering significant long-term benefits including better support for parents and raised pupil achievement.
It is an impression that's confirmed later on in conversation with head teacher Alan Bayford who emphasises the frequency with which the island is literally detached, particularly in the summer, due to passing water traffic requiring the raising of part of the current road link to let them through.
Faced with such challenges, on taking up his role at West Minster in 1996 Mr Bayford quickly realised that his remit would have to be far broader than the immediate school population if he was to improve achievement significantly among his pupils.

West Minster School has a native French speaker on its staff and has taken this opportunity to build in the use of French across the curriculum.
A key element was building the confidence and experience of the teaching assistant, leading to a fundamental change in her job description, which reflected the extension of her working hours.
The success of the scheme at West Minster has relied greatly on the presence of a native French speaker but many schools will have staff with the relevant language skills, and who can offer a similar, fun 'cross curricular' approach to the teaching of one or more MFLs.
