The exact origin of the mint julep is unknown, but one legend is that a nineteenth century Kentucky boatman on the Mississippi River went ashore in search of spring water to mix with his bourbon.
Mint juleps are traditionally served in a julep cup, traditionally made of silver, which enhances the frostiness of the drink.
The souvenir glasses in which the juleps are served at each year’s Derby are typically made of glass, however, and are easier to come by than the silver julep cups.

For each julep fill a silver cup or 10-ounce glass with some of the ice, add 1 to 2 tablespoons of the mint syrup, or to taste, and 1 1/2 ounces bourbon, and stir the julep or holding the cup at the rim rotate it back and forth very rapidly.
In a silver julep cup or 10-ounce glass crush together with the back of a spoon the mint leaves, the sugar, and the water until the suger is dissolved and fill the cup with the ice.

They came in a narrow but tall 'souvenir' glass, and while I had never had a Mint Julep before, I think this was a pretty good example of what they 'should' taste like.
