  Minturnae - LoveToKnow 1911
MINTURNAE, an ancient city of the Aurunci, in Italy, situated on the N.W. bank of the Liris with a suburb on the opposite bank 1 z m.
It became a colony in 295 B.C. In 88 B.C. Marius in his flight from Sulla hid himself in the marshes of Minturnae.
The ruins consist of an amphitheatre (now almost entirely demolished, but better preserved in the 18th century), a theatre, and a very fine aqueduct in opus reticulatum, the quoins of which are of various colours arranged in patterns to produce a decorative effect.

They were ousted by the Catholic league after the Battle of Garigliano (915), and Minturnae passed to Gaeta.

Less than 1 Km from the camping there is the archaeological park of Minturnae with the ancient Roman Theatre, the Forum and the Shops.
The remains of the ancient Minturnae are settled near the border of Campania region.
The church is in the centre of a typical medioeval village, built up in the IX century; if you visit it, you can see many finds such as column, marbles and inscriptions from the ancient Minturnae, that was left by its inhabitants because of the continuos incursions of Longobards and Saracens.

Minturnae was an installation of Aurunci, that rebelled to Romans in 314 A.C. were pitilessment killed and the city, destroyed, were replaced by a colony deduced.
The building of Via Appia, in 312 A.C., that connected Rome to Capua, ordained definitively of this section of southern Lazio in Rome and so it arrived at Naples.
The strategic position of the harbour increased Minturnae at point that in the second half of II century it became an important stop for naval trade, as it was in a transit position between Lazio and Campania.

One of the salient finds arising from excavations in the region of ancient Minturnae is a sanctuary to the goddess Marica, the earliest stages of which date from the 6th c.
The second point is not in dispute, and Harvey’s discussion of possible connections between Marica and Diana is interesting in and of itself.

Aquae Sinuessanae, was a name derived not from Sessa, the ancient Suessa Aurunca, but from the adjacent Sinuessa, a town about ten miles southeast of Minturnae.
The name did not indicate marshes, but natural hot springs, particularly noted for their salubrity.

This is the site of ancient Minturnae, a town predating the Romans.
You may wander the four or five acres of ground and see remains of a Roman amphitheater, columns and graceful arches, mosaic floors, block long sections of Appian pavement, city gates and the exposed underpinnings of a Roman bath.
There is a fine example of a Roman bridge here, but you need old shoes and a willingness to tramp through the underbrush to find it.
