Plus and minus signs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The plus (+) and minus (−) signs are used universally to represent the notions of positive and negative as well as the operations of addition and subtraction.
Because of the special use of the minus sign in mathematics, written mathematics should avoid as much as possible hyphens and dashes that could be misread as minus signs.
The Unicode minus sign is designed to be the same length and height as the plus and equals signs.

Plus-minus sign - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The plus-minus sign (±) is a mathematical symbol commonly used to indicate the precision of an approximation, or as a convenient shorthand for a quantity with two possible values.
The rarer minus-or-plus sign (∓) is not generally found in legacy encodings and does not have a named HTML entity but is available in Unicode with codepoint
In a pinch, a crude version of these symbols can also be formed by underlining/overlining a + sign ( + + ).

The plus (+) and minus (−) signs are used universally to represent the operations of addition and subtraction, and have been extended to many other meanings, more or less analogous.
The Egyptian hieroglyphic sign for addition, for example, resembled a pair of legs walking in the direction in which the text was written, with the reverse sign indicating subtraction.
The earliest appearance of the modern signs seems to come from a book by Johannes Widman in 1489.

 minus - definition by dict.die.net
Minus sign (Math.), the sign [-] denoting minus, or less, prefixed to negative quantities, or quantities to be subtracted.
Formerly, according to Franklin's theory of a single electric fluid, negative electricity was supposed to be electricity in a degree below saturation, or the natural amount for a given body.
Negative quantity (Alg.), a quantity preceded by the negative sign, or which stands in the relation indicated by this sign to some other quantity.

A hyphen is equivalent to a minus sign....
If the problem is with printing a minus sign, such as in a Word document, and the hyphen is not close enough to what you want, you may wish to try changing your font, if not for the entire document, then at least for this one symbol.

In the fixed-width font used by Info, `@minus{}' is the same as a hyphen.
You should not use `@minus{}' inside `@code' or `@example' because the width distinction is not made in the fixed-width font they use.
When you use `@minus' to specify the mark beginning each entry in an itemized list, you do not need to type the braces (*note `@itemize': itemize.).

The earliest print appearance of the modern signs seems to come from a book on "Behende und hüpsche Rechenung auff allen Kauffmanschafft" or Mercantile Arithmetic by Johann Widman in 1489, used to indicate surpluses and deficits.

Let's say "C" and folder "Windows" has been expanded, and all of the "Windows" sub-folders appear, and there is a minus sign next to the name "Windows", and the sub-folder "System" is highlighted.
Clicking on the minus sign next to the folder name "Windows" should cause all of the "Windows" sub-folders to collapse and the minus sign next to the "Windows" folder name should revert to a +, and the highlight move to the folder "Windows".
THEN, they expand again, the + changes to a minus and the highlight moves back to the "System" name, then again moves back to and now stops at the "Windows" name, with the minus sign still there, and all of the "Windows" sub-folders still expanded.

The ambiguity arises because the short centered dash we call the minus sign is used for two purposes.
The minus in front is not a unary minus attached to the ω.
The unary minus and the exponentiation operator, **, are assigned to the highest priority group but, because that group is evaluated right to left, the ** in -2**2 will be evaluated before the change of sign.

We usually use the plus-or-minus sign, with the plus on top, when we want to indicate that both signs are valid.
The classic example is in the quadratic formula, where each choice of sign for the square root leads to a different root.
This indicates that we choose either the top sign in both plases, or the bottom sign in both places.

Date: 03/09/2002 at 12:54:31 From: Doctor Ian Subject: Re: Algebra 1 (equations) Hi Kim, This is really shorthand for two separate equations: y = k y = -k It's a little like when you say 'Pat is at either McDonalds or Burger King'.
In this case, we use the shorthand '+/-' ('plus or minus') to indicate the ambiguity: y=4 x=sqrt(y) = +/- 2 y=9 x=sqrt(y) = +/- 3 In lots of cases, we can simply ignore the negative value.

Plus and minus signs: This is a rich source of confusion.
Trouble is, it's counterintuitive because the minus sign corresponds to a situation when reserves rise, and the plus sign corresponds to a situation when reserves fall.
We're so used to thinking "plus sign good" that it's hard to wrap the brain around the fact that a big positive number in "changes in reserves" means your country is burning through its precious stash of reserve assets at an perilous rate.

One of the, if not the, fastest and most efficient ways is to use two negation operators together, which changes the sign twice, resulting in a numeric value.
If you go to the thread referred to by Paddy, and remove the double unary from the Sumproduct formula, the answer is 0 (zero).
My understanding of the double unary is that the first “-” converts true/false to -1/0 (True = 1, false = 0) and the second “-” changes the sign to 1/0.

In Microsoft Excel, when you create a custom number format that contains a text string, and you apply this format to a negative number, the text string may appear between the minus sign (-) and the number.
To create a custom number format so that the minus sign for negative number appears directly before the number, you must include formatting specifically for negative numbers.
The section of the format after the semicolon (;) places the minus sign to the right of the text string when the number is negative.
