  Classic Panos: Orchomenos: History
Orchomenos in Boeotia, with a Late Bronze Age palace decorated by colorful frescoes and an adjacent royal tomb dubbed the "Treasury of Minyas" by its excavator, the pioneering archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann, was one of the richest and most important centers of the Mycenaean world.
Famous also for its well-preserved fortification walls of the late Classical period, Orchomenos was one of the very first towns to worship the graces, or Charites, for whom musical and poetic competitions were held at a festival called the Charitesia.
The site was occupied continuously from the Neolithic period to the time of Alexander the Great, but it was during the later 14th and 13th centuries BC that Orchomenos first became a settlement of major importance.

In the Bronze Age Orchomenos became in the fourteenth and thirteenth centuries a rich and important centre of civilisation in Mycenaean Greece, the rival to Thebes, which claimed Heracles for its champion.
According to its founding myth, its royal dynasty had been established by Minyas, whose followers, the Minyans had come from coastal Thessaly to settle the site.
In 1880-1886 Heinrich Schliemann's excavations (H. Schliemann, Orchomenos, Leipzig 1881) revealed the tholos tomb he called the "Tomb of Minyas", a Mycenaean monument that equalled the "Tomb of Atreus" at Mycenae itself.

The bronze rosettes which adorn the walls are very impressive, and the Thalamos, (as the inner chamber is known) was hewn out of rock, with the intact ceiling made of green schist slabs carved with spirals interwoven with fan-shaped leaves and surrounded with a border of rosettes.
Both east and west of the Treasury of Minyas are remains of a Neolithic City (6000-3400BC) with beehive huts made of unfired brick on stone masonry foundations.
Above this was found a city dated between 4th and 3rd millennia BC with deep round ashpits 6-8meters in diameter; above that a 3rd to 2nd millenia BC city typical of Thessalian settlements of that era and containing some of the Minyan ware (see above).

Two fragments of relief sculpture in gypsum which feature bulls, both now in the British Museum, are thought by most authorities to have formed part of the original sculpted decoration of the walls of the side chamber, although some scholars have placed them on the exterior facade of the stomion.
The side chamber of the Treasury of Minyas also featured relief sculpture in the form of an elaborate composition of interlocking spirals which decorates the two enormous schist slabs forming the ceiling of this room.
Nail holes in parallel horizontal rows on the interior of the vault of the Treasury of Atreus' main tomb chamber probably held gilded bronze rosettes.
