Terrestrial Ecoregions -- Central Zambezian Miombo woodlands (AT0704)
In this ecoregion, mature miombo woodland trees are usually 15 to 20 m tall, with a broadleaf shrub and grass understory beneath.

In miombo competition for water during the dry season causes the trees to be quite widely spaced such that their canopies do not form a complete cover.
Typically miombo trees are semi-deciduous meaning that they lose some or all of their leaves in the dry season depending on its severity.
Miombo's structure and composition is largely maintained by periodic dry season fires, which can be a frequent as twice a year in populated areas.

 Vegetation
Miombo woodlands are generally considered to be deciduous, but they are neither strictly evergreen nor deciduous.
Miombo is regarded as woodland, in spite of its closed canopy (with crowns touching), because of its light foliage which allows sufficient light to reach the ground to support a continuous ground cover of grasses and other herbs.
Miombo woodland is defined as any woodland which is dominated by species of three related genera in the family Leguminosae: Brachystegia, Julbernardia and Isoberlinia.

Introduction To the LUCC Miombo Project
Miombo CD Miombo comprises those ecosystems in the seasonal tropics dominated by trees of the closely related genera Brachystegia, Julbernardia and Isoberlinia (subfamily Caesalpinioideae, family Fabaceae - the legumes).
Miombo woodland is the dominant vegetation type of the Central African plateau, extending from Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire), through Zambia, Malawi and eastern Angola, to Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
Studies of the patterns, causes and consequences of land-use and land-cover changes in miombo are intended to be undertaken by a consortium of participating institutions and individuals, drawn primarily from within the region, at a network of sites to be located along complex gradients of increasing land-use intensity and rainfall in the region.

And yet there was evidence that the adult trees were valued by the local people, and this gave rise to plans to study their knowledge of the trees in the stages prior to the fully grown state.
As is clear from the survey, local people have no trouble identifying the valuable miombo hardwood species when they are growing in the forests: such mature trees may be recognized by their tree architecture, characteristic bark, leaves, and/or inflorescence and fruits.
It is interesting to note that many of the miombo species which are already being grown by local farmers belong to the first category, while all five hardwood species studied belong to the latter category.

Terrestrial Ecoregions -- Angolan Miombo woodlands (AT0701)
Miombo woodland is distinguished from other African savanna, woodland and forest formations by the dominance of tree species in the family Fabaceae, subfamily Caesalpinioideae, particularly in the genera Brachystegia, Julbernardia, and Isoberlinia which are seldom found outside miombo (Campbell et al.
Most of the miombo tree and shrub species shed their leaves in the late dry season, and the miombo vegetation is bare for a short time, usually less than three months.
The mammal fauna of miombo woodlands is poorer in both species and animal numbers than in the savanna communities of the Southwest arid biome to the south or the Guineo-Congolian forests to the north (Huntley 1974).

The vegetation of the park (Cassells, 1995) is predominantly miombo, a deciduous woodland dominated by the leguminous tree genera Brachystegia, Julbernardia and Isoberlinia.
Miombo is generally more easily defined floristically than physiognomically, and this applies to the KNP where miombo woodland ranges from single storey scrub on shallow soils to tall woodland with a canopy height of 20 metres or more.
Miombo ecosystems also encompass the grassy, seasonally waterlogged depressions called dambos which are characterised by poorly drained acid vertisols and are dominated by the nutritionally poor grasses Loudetia simplex and Hyparrhenia spp.

“Miombo” woodlands, an ecosystem stretching from Central East to West Africa dominated by Brachystegia, Julbernardia, and Isoberlinia, are a unit of ecological analysis for research on global deforestation, as exemplified by the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme’s research project entitled “The Miombo Network”.
This hypothesis follows from various reports on deforestation in the miombo region of Tanzania as well as from the broader relationships articulated in cultural and political ecology and land use/cover change research.
As the conversion of miombo woodlands into cashew farms (for cash crops) is common in Southeastern Tanzania, the research design uses the conversion into cashew as an indicator of market integration.

Terrestrial Ecoregions -- Eastern Miombo woodlands (AT0706)
Unlike the other miombo woodland ecoregions (Angolan, Central Zambezian, and Southern), which are found on the Central African Plateau, this ecoregion is mostly confined to lower elevations of the East African Plateau (Bridges 1990), ranging from 200 m along the eastern coastal regions to 800 to 900 m in the interior.
The underlying geology of the Eastern Miombo Woodland consists mainly of metamorphosed upper-Precambrian schists and gneisses, interspersed with intrusive granites (Bridges 1990).
This ecoregion is separated from other miombo ecoregions in that it is mostly confined to lower elevations of the East African Plateau, and is dominated by the floristically impoverished ‘drier Zambezian miombo woodland’ outlined by White (1983).

 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This miombo sub-type, according to Schmitz, is an edaphic association and although not explicitly part of a regression sequence, is regarded by him as a form of degraded evergreen forest or ‘muhulu’.
Although there was a chipya/mateshe area adjacent to the miombo woodland plots, which could act as a source of evergreen species for colonisation of fire-protected miombo, this was not included in the experiment.
Fanshawe was therefore close to Lawton (1964) in that he believed that miombo species were invading the degraded evergreen habitat, and that continued fire pressure selected the fire-tolerant miombo species that eventually make up the woody component of chipya.
