 379 - Abstract (11th CROI)
Here we report the full-length and partial sequences of SIVtal strains from two talapoins monkeys (Miopithecus oguensis) wild-caught in Cameroon and from 4 captive animals obtained from different U.S. oos.
Conclusions:  The geographic range of the gabon talapoin (Miopithecus oguensis) is from the Cameroon, south of the River Sanaga, and Rio Muni, Gabon.

Using a neighbor-joining method, the clustering of these 3 lineages was significant in Gag and Pol trees as well as in the Env tree when excluding the SIVcpz lineage which has been recently shown to be recombinant between SIVgsn and SIVrcm.
Although talapoin monkeys belong to the Miopithecus genus while Syke's, greater spot-nosed, mustached and mona monkeys are from Cercopithecus species, these data suggest that SIVtal, SIVsyk, and SIVgsn/mon/mus evolved from a common ancestor.

Antibodies to type D retrovirus in talapoin monkeys.
Sera from 154 African non-human primates were screened for the presence of antibodies to type D retrovirus proteins.
Four of five talapoin monkeys (Miopithecus sp.) captured in western Africa were positive for antibodies to type D retrovirus by ELISA and by immunoblot reactivity.
Talapoins are the only African non-human primates that have so far shown evidence for type D retrovirus infection.

The branch of Miopithecus was drawn based upon the genetic evidence of the mitochondrial DNA 12S rRNA gene and SERV proviral genes (19).
Similar results were obtained for the LTR-UTR sequences, although Cercopithecus and Miopithecus could not be included.

cephus (SIVmus), and Miopithecus ogouensis (SIVtal) formed species-specific monophyletic clusters that were roughly equidistant from each other as well as from all previously defined SIV lineages in this region of the pol gene.
Finally, we confirmed the SIVtal infection of wild talapoin monkeys (Miopithecus ogouensis).
These data establish for the first time that a considerable proportion of wild-living primates in Cameroon are infected with SIV, posing a potential source of infection to those who come in contact with them.
