The early 18th century saw a brief revival of the Karma Kagyu Lineage due to the constant Dharma activities of the 12th Karmapa Changchub Dorje (1703-1732), and the 8th Shamarpa Chokyi Dhondrub (1695-1732).
The current and 14th Kunzig Shamarpa Mipham Chokyi Lodro, was born in 1952 as the nephew of the 16th Karmapa.
The 14th Shamarpa recognized the 17th Karmapa to be the first-born son of the 3rd Mipham Rinpoche of the Nyingma School.

For example the 14th Karmapa, Thegchog Dorje, installed the head of the Drugpa Kagyu, the 9th Drugchen Mipham Chokyi Gyamtso (also known as Mingyur Wangi Gyalpo), as the interim director of the adminstration.
The 17th Karmapa's father is the third reincarnation of the 1st Mipham Rinpoche, who was the head of 13 Nyingma monasteries in Kham, Tibet.

His family originated with Achak Dru, one of the six original Tibetans who were born of the union of the Monkey Bodhisattva (an emanation of Avalokiteshvara) and the female Rock Demoness, whose descendant was a general of the king of Mongolia.
Mipham said, “If I am to be the Rigdzin King, Drakpo Chakkor Chen, the Wrathful Wielder of the Iron Wheel, I should be able to handle them.” When Mipham was staying near Ga To, the Chinese army came near, but was not able to come close to the lama’s residence, and had to go away.
This was translated and adapted from Samantabhadra Dharmakirti’s short biography of Jamgon Mipham, found in Mipham’s collected writings, by Lhobpon Rechungpa and Eric Forgeng, during the teaching of the Beacon of Certainty at Tashi Choling, in the Spring of 2003.

He was born in 1910 in Eastern Tibet to a family descended from the royal lineage of the ninth century king Trisong Detsen.

THIS COMMENTARY on Chandrakirti’s Madhyamakavatara was compiled from the notes and oral teachings of Kunkhyen Lama Mipham by Kathok Situ Rinpoche and Khenpo Kunzang Pelden at the request of Shechen Gyaltsap Rinpoche.
Mipham Rinpoche was Mafijushri in person, and his disciples, the scholars who compiled this text, were themselves learned and accomplished masters.
It is interesting to recall that Kathok Situ Rinpoche recognized and brought up Jamyang Khyentse Chokyi Lodro, the previous incarnation of Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, while Shechen Gyaltsap Rinpoche was the root teacher of Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche.

The present Shamarpa, Palden Mipham Chokyi Lodro, recognized the son of Mipham Rinpoche of Dzakhog, Derge, East Tibet and his wife Dechen Wangmo as the reincarnation of the XVIth Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje.
He holds empowerments of the Buddhist Tantras brought to Tibet by Marpa, the Mahamudra teachings from the Mahasiddha traditions of Saraha and Maitripa and other Indian Buddhist masters, as well as the Six Doctrines and other teachings of the Highest Buddhist Tantras emphasized by the Indian Buddhist master Naropa.
Together with H. the Gyalwa Karmapa, Trinley Thaye Dorje, and H. the Kunzig Shamarpa, Mipham Chokyi Lodro, the monastic sangha conducted the ritual of the 16 Sthaviras.

But Khyentse Chokyi Lodro’s answer was: “ the time has come for you to teach and transmit to others the countless precious teachings you have received.” Since then Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche worked constantly with tireless energy for the benefit of beings.
Several enlightened saints, including the great master Chogyur Dechen Lingpa (1829-1870) and Khyentse Chokyi Lodro (1993-1959) prophecied that if a monastery of the Nyingma tradition was built near the Bodhnath stupa, boundless benefit would ensue for the Buddha Dhadrma and for all beings.

These reincarnations include Chokyi Wangpo (1894-1909) of Dzongsar, Chokyi Lodro (1893-1959) of Kathok, Karma Khyentse Ozer (1896-1945) of Palpung, Guru Tsewang (1897-?) of Dzogchen, Kunzang Drodul Dechen Dorje (1897-1946) of Dza Palme, and Dilgo Khyentse Tashi Paljor (1910-1991) of Shechen.
Among these incarnations it is said that Kathok Khyentse Chokyi Lodro (1893-1959) was the most outstanding of them all.

 Masters Born in the Twentieth Century
Unique in having received the transmission of all the existing teachings of the immensely rich Nyingma tradition, Dudjom Rinpoche was famous in particular as a great Terton (treasure revealer), whose Termas are now widely taught and practiced, and as the leading exponent of Dzogchen.
It was he who formally recognised and enthroned him as the mind incarnation of HH Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo (1820-92), one of the main proponents of the Rimé movement.

Furthermore, from the great Khenpo Jamde, Pande Odzer (disciple of Mipham Rinpoche, 1848 - 1912), Rinpoche received the "Nyingma Kama", "Kagyed" empowerments, Sangye Lingpa's "Lama Gongdu" and "Sangwa Nyingpo" according to the Zur tradition; as well as the cycle of the "Osel Sangwa Nyingthig".
