Flipside Movie Emporium: Miracle Movie Review
Thankfully, Miracle never takes its pedigree for granted, and delivers the goods largely by focusing on the roots of the victory instead of the cheap emotional payoff that other sports films are so obsessed with.
Miracle centers primarily on that scheme, as the coach selects a gaggle of wide-eyed college kids and mercilessly forges them into something more than the sum of their parts.
Miracle's ad campaign is rife with jingoism ("plucky underdog" doesn't exactly fit our national character these days), but the film itself is surprisingly even-handed, staying true to the facts without resorting to stereotypes.

Miracle Movie - True Story of the 1980 US Olympic Hockey Team - Herb Brooks
The Miracle on Ice was a monumental victory on both an athletic and political level.
The nation was looking for a distraction from world events, which included the impending threat of nuclear war, the country's hostages in Iran, and the long lines at the gas pumps.
In 1981, the TV movie Miracle On Ice aired with actor Karl Malden portraying Herb Brooks and Steve Guttenberg as goalie Jim Craig.

 Miracle Movie Review
Miracle is based upon actual historical fact and is, at it's heart, a classic underdog story in every sense of the word.
In this respect, Miracle is reminiscent of Seasbiscuit (albeit not as effective) in it's portrayal of an underdog rising to challenge and instilling a sense of hope in a dispirited nation.
Miracle is perhaps the best example of this since Hoosiers, a beautifully made film in which Gene Hackman played a coach who would take an Indiana high school basketball team all the way to the finals.  Certainly, Brooks  knew his team and more importantly, he knew how to push them and ultimately inspire them to their utmost potential.

Colorado Kids Video Reviews - Miracle
Well neither did I until I saw the movie "Miracle." "Miracle" is a true story of how a group of young American boys who didn't know each other, beat the 1976 gold medallist soviet hockey team.
The movie was always changing course so you would never know what was to happen next, unless of course you were alive in 1980.
The movie probably would have been easier to understand if I was actually there when the miracle had happened.

Miracle Movie Review (Kurt Russell) By Brendan Cullin Empire Movies
The movie is played against the backdrop of tense political times - the U.S. was in the middle of the Cold War, the Iran hostage crisis, gas shortages - and the Olympic victory was seen as an event that uplifted and united a nation.
This movie is about the selection and the mental and physical training of the team that went on to defeat the Russians.
Although I am too young to really remember Brooks' role in the Miracle game of 1980, I was fortunate enough to follow his coaching career in the National Hockey League (where he coached the New York Rangers and the Pittsburgh Penguins) and his encore performance as coach of Team USA at the 2002 Olympics.

Miracle Movie Review **1/2 out of **** - for the Kurt Russell Disney Hockey Movie
The movie, starring Kurt Russell ("Dark Blue," 2002), was a semi-inspiring, semi-enjoyable family oriented film that chronicled the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team's journey to the gold medal, or I should say to their defeat of the Russians.
The opening of "Miracle" attempted to remind the audience of the state of the country in 1980.
I wanted to feel this more during "Miracle," perhaps through several minor characters not associated with the Olympics, who we could have ended up watching the big game with, so we the audience wouldn't be the lone spectators.

Miracle Movie Review at Hollywood Video
Miracle is the story of the late Brooks, the coach who took 20 kids who hated each other and fused them into a hockey team that achieved what Sports Illustrated called "The Greatest Sports Moment in the 20th Century." Prior to the Lake Placid Olympics, the United States had lost—badly—for several straight Games.
Well, that's obviously an unfair question since Miracle is based on something that many remember as being both the most exciting event in the history of sports and the first time they ever saw their father cry.
Miracle is based on the real-life struggle and triumph of the 1980 Olympic Hockey team and their magnificent season.

Not only does Miracle let you relive that glorious event, it goes even further back, chronicling not only the team's history but also America's mindset during the last decade of the Cold War.
If you've seen it once, you've seen it a dozen times, even in classic sports movie like Hoosiers that get away with it: the rah-rah speeches, the tension as the team seems to fall apart, and the ultimate victory of the underdogs who overcome great obstacles to become champions.

It is a mesmerizing, rollicking good time of a movie, the type that puts a lump in the throat, tear in the eye and a smile on the face, all at the same time.
It’s all edited with crackerjack precision by John Gilroy (“Narc”), the movie weaving and bobbing through many of the games more intimate facets with the unwavering refinement of a speed skating ballerina.
Maybe that is the greatest miracle of “Miracle.” Not only does it remind us of one of sport’s greatest moments; it also reminds us of the wondrous achievements human beings can accomplish if they set their sights high enough.

''Miracle'' retells the ''greatest moment in sports history'' (according to its makers), in which a team of scrappy boys from Boston and Minnesota are pitted against the glacial behemoths of the USSR.
Of course, this movie is brought to you by the same studio responsible for such recent odds-beating, feel-good sports flicks as ''Remember the Titans'' and ''The Rookie,'' so don't bet against loving him by the end.
The movie qualifies as a sort of nostalgic political period piece: Remember when we weren't the most loathed country on the planet? But no matter how hard the movie pushes them on us, world politics are ultimately beside the point.

reviewjournal.com -- Neon: MOVIE REVIEW: 'Miracle'
But "Miracle" has other things on its mind than the hockey clash that became known as the "Miracle on Ice." (Which, hardly coincidentally, served as the title for a 1981 TV-movie featuring Karl Malden as Brooks and Steve Guttenberg as standout goalie Jim Craig.)
And considering the movie's almost exclusive focus on Brooks, it could use a bit more of his off-the-ice life -- especially the conflict between Brooks and his sometimes understandably exasperated wife.
In "Miracle," he moves beyond Brooks' external quirks (sing-songy Minnesota accent, Dry Look hairstyle) to capture his intensity and single-minded focus, along with the old but unhealed wounds driving him, and his team, to glory.

I remember how much I loved "Miracle on Ice", but even though I don't remember it very well, this film brought the same emotion for me. I really liked the beginning, setting up the tone of the times to let you know what the previous few years had been.
I had also forgotten that the USSR game wasn't the final one, but the voice-over and footage of the final game didn't bother me. Even though it wasn't the final one, the USSR game really was the big one.
The only distraction for me was a slight mention in the movie about a possible boycott of the 1980 summer olympics.

Now comes "Miracle," a rousing and satisfying (if more perfunctory and less masterful) chronicle of the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team -- a band of unknown young scrubs who captured America's imagination and pride by beating the unbeatable Russians (and later winning the gold medal) at the Lake Placid games.
But in his characterization there's a strong sense of the man's integrity (he's as hard on himself as he is on his players), his personal and professional flaws and foibles, and his tacit faith in the often cocky young recruits he slowly brow-beats into a focused, disciplined unit.
While the movie has notably accurate but mercifully ungarish period style, the director is somewhat less elegant in his endless incidental reminders of the socio-political atmosphere in which the story takes place.
