 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Miracle
The miraculous character of the fact consists in this: that its nature and the surrounding circumstances are of such a kind that we are forced to admit natural forces alone could not have produced it, and the only rational explanation is to be had in the interference of Divine agency.
The perception of its miraculous character is a rational act of the mind, and is simply the application of the principle of causality with the methods of induction.
The existence of the Church, the kingdom of God on earth, in which Christ and His Holy Spirit abide, rendered illustrious by the miraculous lives of saints of all countries and all times, is a perpetual standing witness for the reality of miracles (Bellar., "De notis eccl.", LIV, xiv).

The Miraculous Mandarian: 05 The Mandarin enters and remains immobile in the doorway
The Miraculous Mandarin is, along with Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, one of the great expressions of musical savagery, and here the composer illustrates the "urban jungle." The music opens with sounds of traffic and commotion, and it's an expressionist nightmare from that point on.
The Miraculous Mandarin depicts the violence and the desperation of the story it is based upon, while the Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta is possibly the greatest orchestral work of the twentieth-century.

Ouspensky invested at least ten years writing, editing and refining In Search of the Miraculous; those ten years were based on many previous years of his intimate contact with G. Gurdjieff and his teaching under severe and sometimes life-threatening conditions caused by the political upheaval in revolutionary Russia and two world wars.
At the other end of the stick, however, is this marvelous realization that man is a machine that can know his mechanism -- his mechanicality-- if he studies it, and that a sleeping man has the possibility to be awakened.
In Search of the Miraculous is not for the spiritually lazy; it requires a great deal of the reader, really.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Miraculous Medal
One of the most remarkable facts recorded in connection with the Miraculous Medal is the conversion of a Jew, Alphonse Ratisbonne of Strasburg, who had resisted the appeals of a friend to enter the Church.
Ratisbonne consented, somewhat reluctantly, to wear the medal, and being in Rome, he entered, by chance, the church of Sant' Andrea delle Fratte and beheld in a vision the Blessed Virgin exactly as she is represented on the medal; his conversion speedily followed.
This confraternity adopted the Miraculous Medal as its badge, and the members, known as the Children of Mary, wear it attached to a blue ribbon.

This clearly indicates the miraculous character of the event and destroys any suggestion that this was simply a token meal shared among the disciples that was intended to provoke generosity among the people.
The immediate reaction of the crowd in verse 14—“Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world”—suggests that at least some among them connected this sign to the miraculous provision of manna in the wilderness while Israel was under the leadership of Moses.

So it was that, throughout antiquity, during the early history of the Church, throughout the Middle Ages, and indeed down to a comparatively recent period, testimony to miraculous interpositions which would now be laughed at by a schoolboy was accepted by the leaders of thought.
With such a disposition regarding the wildest stories, it is not surprising that the assertion of St. Gregory of Nazianzen, during the second century, as to the cures wrought by the martyrs Cosmo and Damian, was echoed from all parts of Europe until every hamlet had its miracle-working saint or relic.
The testimony of the great fathers of the Church to the continuance of miracles is overwhelming; but everything shows that they so fully expected miracles on the slightest occasion as to require nothing which in these days would be regarded as adequate evidence.

I mentioned what I thought about my 'miraculous' recovery and how it didn't feel miraculous a few posts ago in regard to writing a book about my experiences but I have been doing some more thinking about it this week so you have to put up with a more complete post about it.
Nearly everyone I meet, if I know them, wants to tell me how amazing or miraculous (or some other similar superlative) my recovery is. It doesn't really matter but I don't like talking about it because generally I can think of better things to talk about.
The main thing, however, is that I don't like talking about it because it feels immodest because it implies that my efforts are amazing or miraculous when it's probably all a matter of luck or something else outside of my control.
