Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The small-press fl and white comics were successful enough to inspire a syndicated cartoon series, which catapulted the characters into an international merchandising craze.
While the comic was meant for an older audience, the cartoon was standard children's fare and typically avoided overt human violence and any semblance of real conflict.
Published by Mirage Studios, it was released in 1984 and became an overnight sensation for independent comics.

Encyclopedia: Alternative-comics   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-05)
The term "alternative comics" is one of several labels applied to a range of comic books, graphic novels, and allied forms that have appeared since about 1980, in the wake of the underground comix movement of the late 1960s and early 70s.
Those comics are typically produced by a team of workers operating on tight deadlines: a writer, a penciler, an inker, a letterer, a colorist, and an editor.
The subject matter and style of "mainstream" comics is in large part dictated by their publisher, who hires the personnel to produce the comics according to well established conventions of a genre.

The only comics I lack now are the TMNT Archie series (I only have a few of these) and a random number of hard to find specials.

The comic focused around the four anthropomorphic turtles, who, as one might infer from the name, are also teenagers, mutants and ninjas.
The concept was apparently borne from a comical drawing that played upon the inherent contradiction of a slow, cold-blooded reptile and the speed and agility of the Japanese martial art.
Most comics fans will recognize the accident, involving a blind man and a truck carrying radioactive waste, as an allusion to Marvel Comics' Daredevil, which was one of the primary influences of TMNT.

Usagi was the first on-going color series for Mirage, and right after that, the Ninja Turtles went to color, and eventually, they got set up so that they could even do the color separation in-house, with their computers.
