Dassault Mirage IV - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Dassault Mirage IV is a French jet-propelled supersonic strategic bomber and reconnaissance aircraft.
By the 1970s, it was clear that the vulnerability of the Mirage IV to air defenses (even in low-level flight) made the delivery of gravity bombs impractical.
In 1996 the Mirage IVP's nuclear mission was transferred to the Mirage 2000N and EB 2/91 was disbanded.

The Dassault Mirage F1 is a single-seat air-superiority fighter and attack aircraft built by Dassault Aviation of France.
Instead, the Mirages were kept at a distance, performing combat air patrols (CAPs) on the fringes of the combat area, in case the border clashes gave way to open hostilities.
The Mirage F1 was featured in the 2004 anime series "Area 88" and in the movie "The Concorde: Airport '79".

Mirage IV Developed in the wake of the Suez crisis (1956), the Mirage IV is a two-seater, twin-engine supersonic bomber having an effective range of up to 4,500 km with in-flight refueling.
The 50 Mirage IV-A ordered in March 1959 were all finally delivered between 1964 and 1966; dispersed on nine air bases, organized into three mixed squadrons of bombardment, composed each of three squadrons of bombardment and a squadron for in-flight refueling.
In June 1964, it was decided to order 12 additional Mirage IV-A having in addition the strategic capacity; this was explained by the fact that the force Mirage IV was to remain in service at least until 1975, and that had consequently to be compensated for attrition.

 The Dassault Mirage IV
It is said that there is nothing so permanent as a temporary solution, and the Mirage IV was still flying in combat at the end of the century, if admittedly in small numbers and as a spy plane, not a bomber.
Despite the fact that the Mirage IV had no bomb-bay, was crammed full of fuel tanks, and was also generally fitted with twin 2,500-liter (660 US gallon) drop tanks, its range for its assigned mission, penetrating Soviet airspace, was still marginal.
The Mirage IV obtained a new lease on life in the bomber role when 18 were rebuilt as "Mirage IVPs", where "P" for "Penetration", to carry the ASMP ramjet-powered stand-off missile, instead of the AN-22 bomb.

 The Dassault Mirage IV
The company envisioned a scaled-up version of the Mirage III fighter, originally focusing on a "Mirage IVC" with twin Pratt and Whitney J75 turbojets, but finally settled on a smaller design, the "Mirage IVA", which was powered by twin Atar turbojets as used on the single-engine Mirage III.
The Mirage IVA was an all-metal aircraft made mostly of aircraft aluminum.
The Mirage IV* would have been license-built by BAC and was to have featured the avionics suite developed for the TSR.2, as well as a fuselage extension of 61 centimeters (2 feet) and twin Rolls-Royce Spey 25R afterburning turbofans, providing 93.4 kN (9,525 kgp / 21,000 lbf) thrust each.

Originally designed as a high speed strategic bomber to deliver the French nuclear bomb as part of the Force de Frappe, 62 Mirage IV aircraft were built and equipped 3 Escadres; 91 at Mont de Marsan, 93 at Istres and 94 at Avord from the early 1960’s.
Essentially a scaled up Mirage III fighter, the Mirage IV carries a crew of 2 in tandem cockpits.
Twelve aircraft were later converted into dedicated reconnaissance aircraft and redesignated to IV R. Initially the aircraft carried the CT 52 strategic reconnaissance pod which contained vertical, oblique and forward cameras - typically three OMERA 36 cameras for high altitude work, three OMERA 35 cameras for low level work and a Wildt mapping camera.
