FilmJerk.com - Film Review: "Gothika"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Kassovitz is a sleek stylist, and the opening scenes of the film display the filmmaker trying to build dread and creepiness efficiently: playing with sudden stops in the soundtrack, milking the supernatural elements of the tale, and making the asylum as big a character as Miranda.
But the first half of the film is built on the fascinating war between the unknown vs. clinical mind, with the second half giving way to gigantic holes in the plot and clownshoes screenwriting just to simply wheeze its way to the safety of a suspense or action sequence.
Whatever potential the film had to start with is a distant memory as the picture ends up promising, or should I say threatening, a future franchise for the ghost busting Miranda.

FILM REVIEW -- Rise, Descent of a Bombshell / Engaging portrait reveals bitter side of Carmen Miranda's life
Miranda, who died in 1955 at age 46 from a heart attack only hours after appearing on Jimmy Durante's television show, was a native of Portugal who was discovered at age 20 by RCA Victor in Brazil, where she lived with her immigrant family.
Famous for lavish banana-laden turbans (a style borrowed from the poor women of Bahia), grinding dance numbers and a bare-midriff look, she was the reigning symbol of the fiery Latin American female in the mid- 1940s, when she was ``imported'' to the United States and soon commanded one of the highest salaries in Hollywood.
The film uses rare archival footage (some showing Brazil awash with dapper European fashions and swaying with tango and samba rhythms), interviews with the star's family and friends and scenes from clips in which actors portray Miranda.

Bright Lights Film Journal | Carmen Miranda
The "lady in the tutti-fruitti hat" brought to American wartime audiences an extravagantly seductive surface: the exoticism of South America, a sensuality tempered by caricature, and outlandish costumes and fruit-laden "hats" that have an unsuspected origin in the fl slums of Brazil.
Carmen Miranda's story is far more complex and heart-wrenching than one would expect of a woman who flashed to prominence in Hollywood in the early 1940s and ended up fixed forever in the public mind as the inspiration for Chiquita Banana and for countless drag queen revues.
Some viewers will be surprised to learn that she was a huge recording and film star in Brazil long before she arrived in the U.S. Though middle-class herself, she was in fact a pioneer of the fl slum music known as samba.

Spider (2002): Ralph Fiennes, Miranda Richardson, Gabriel Byrne - PopMatters Film Review
The film, adapted by Patrick McGrath from his own novel, is full of such shifts in time.
Spider dislikes the slatternly Yvonne, a response exacerbated when he imagines his father's visit to her apartment to work on her "pipes." Here, as the film's interiors become increasingly muted and depressed, characters' behaviors are increasingly extreme: Bill and Yvonne begin having sex in the street and carousing.
This refinement is partly a function of the film's deliberate delicacy of imagery and performances, from Fiennes' singular focus to Richardson's subtle multiplicity.
