| | Second time's no charm for 'Flight of the Phoenix' |
 | | The movie is very skillful at capturing the feeling of being stranded with a bunch of unpleasant people, and it's a terrific survival story, painstakingly presenting an intellectual challenge and taking us through the steps of pulling off an impossible feat. |
 | | The new movie is reset in the Gobi Desert, with Dennis Quaid in the Stewart part, a multi-ethnic cast and, for spice, a woman castaway played by Miranda Otto -- all of which works OK. And it's faithful to the original in many ways, with its major scenes intact. |
 | | So what we have is an MTV version of "Flight of the Phoenix," with the rough outline and all the characters of the original but little of its subtlety, rich characterizations, fascinating conflict or vicarious thrill of rising above the elements. |
