Ex Astris Scientia - Starship Kitbashing
Among the many ways to design a starship, taking available components and reassembling them in a different fashion is often regarded as promising, because it is likely to yield a fast result.
The Nebula class consists of virtually identical components as the Galaxy class, and the ship is only slightly smaller, if at all.
Summarizing, there are credible rearrangements of ship components like the Miranda, Constellation and Nebula, provided that their original designs are modular to some degree and the variant makes sense in that it provides different properties.

 Miranda Class
There's little doubt in fandom that the original Miranda Class was a TOS contemporary, and was refitted during the 2270's.
We've seen plenty of Miranda variants over the years, the first of which was the USS Reliant, seen in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
The main differences are the obvious TOS style appearance, and the fact that it has two separate impulse engines instead of one, and a single shuttlebay aft, instead of two with the later variants.

Despite the small size, the class performed satisfactorily well into the 24th century, with the oldest members of this class continuing their service lifetimes as transports.
Several series of the ships were produced throughout the 23rd and 24th centuries, with many still serving in the fleet through the mid-2370s.
The script called for Reliant, an older cruiser of "Enterprise's own class" but of a "different configuration." This ended up being a different class of starship in it's own right, the first distinct Federation starship design other than the NCC-1701 to ever appear in a filmed, live-action Star Trek production.
