Mircea cel Bătrân (reigned 1386-1418) was one of the most important rulers in Wallachia.
Mircea strengthened the power of the state and organized the different high offices, promoted economic development, increased the state's revenue, and minted silver money that enjoyed wide circulation not only inside the country but also in the neighbouring countries.
Towards the end of his ruling, Mircea signed a treaty with the Ottomans who recognized the freedom of Wallachia in return for a 3,000 gold pieces per year tribute (a small amount).

Vlad II was living in Transylvania while trying to obtain support for his plans to retake the throne from the Danesti Prince, Alexandru I. Centuries later an author by the name of Bram Stoker would use this prince as the basis of his infamous vampire “Dracula.”
In 1442 the Turks invaded Transylvania and Vlad II desperately attempted to remain neutral but when the Turks were defeated, the Hungarians under John Hunyadi became vengeful over Vlad’s lack of support and inaction.

He had three sons with a Moldovan princess: Mircea (bornt in 1430 or 1431, died at his side in 1447, burried alive by the Hungarians), Vlad (Vlad III, Vlad Draculea, later Vlad Ţepeş, bornt in 1431) and Radu (bornt 1438 or 1439, died from syphillis in 1500.
He was a rival of his brother Vlad for the throne, he was quite loyal to the sultin and ruled from 1462 to 1475).
