Gluck - Armide / Delunsch, Workman, Naouri, Podles, Beuron, Polegato, Kozená, Les Musiciens du Louvre,...
This is MY second Gluck's opera (after the French "Orphee et Euridice") and this set was a revelation to me. Minkowski, whose conducting was a major snag in his recording of Handel's "Ariodante", here appears to me as a real star of this magical show.

One cannot help but envy Mireille Delunsch in her role as Iphigénie...A relative newcomer to the international scene, she certainly makes a lasting impression with a top-drawer technique and an all-pervading sense of drama.
One cannot help but envy Mireille Delunsch in her role as Iphigénie, if only for the fact that she has the best arias in the whole opera.

It was a fascinating experience to me, a great Berlioz admirer, to finally find out why he was so fond of Gluck and to see how much Gluck's influence there is in Berlioz's music, especially in his early cantatas.
Maybe it is Mireille Delunsch's wonderful voice which I know from a recording of Berlioz's cantata "Herminie" (with Herreweghe) that brings these comparisons to my mind.
Mireille Delunsch as Armida is splendid and - contrary to what Stanley Sadie from "Gramophone" had to say about her performance (review in June 1999 p.

Armide is a character who doesn't gracefully accept not getting her way, and her angry music is wonderfully performed by Michelle Delunsch, as are her sweeter, more cajoling moments.
He and Delunsch are lovely in their Act Five duet.

Richard Croft (tenor); Mireille Delunsch, Marion Harousseau, Claire Delgado-Boge (soprano)
If heard at Gluck's intended pitch, Croft's vocal "tension", not to mention the added brightness in the orchestra and from the other singers, would have been a real treat, and his low notes, solidly baritonal at Minkowski's pitch, would have been no such thing.
Mireille Delunsch's Eurydice is more womanly than girlish but still sounds innocent; indeed, she is always expressive and makes much of the third act.

 Working Dogs Book Store - Berlioz - Nuits d'été · Herminie / Balleys · Delunsch · Herreweghe
I totally agree with the other reviewers here in finding a complete adn pleasant surprise in Mireille Delunsch - she is a real Falcon.
There is another recording of this cantata, also on Harmonia Mundi, with otherwise unknown to me Michele Lagrange (conducted by Jean-Claude Casadesus) and if you care for Berlioz's early vocal works, this is a wonderful display of his creative powers when he was in his 20-ties.
Well, when I bought this CD few years ago, Delunsch wasn't a particularly often recorded young singer, but recently Gluck's "Armide" with Marc Minkowski made her a real star what, let's hope, means new recordings.

To paraphrase the reviewer below I could say "I never listen to anything but classics", but the rest of his short text would essentially remain the same.
With one correction - it is not Mireille Delunsch who sings "Les Nuits d'Ete" on this CD, but a Swiss mezzo Brigitte Balleys.
Delunsch performs here Berlioz's early cantata "Herminie" and this 20-something minutes long work may be for some listeners of even more importance than "just" another interpretation of "Nuits...".

Mireille Delunsch enjoys herself in the soubrette - ish role of Venus, and the much - hyped Magdalena Kozená turns up in a couple of smaller parts.
The finest singing on the recording is, appropriately, by the Dardanus, John Mark Ainsley, who takes himself completely seriously in the role - there is none of the tongue-in-cheek attitude that afflicts some singers in such parts, and he is equally credible as the conquering hero and the forlorn lover.

The production, by Peter Mussbach, is abstract and spare, dark with luminescent lighting reminiscent of a nightclub, suggesting rather than showing the salon of Violetta and the idle rich of 19th-century Paris.
Mireille DeLunsch as Violetta is visually attractive, her pale, ethereal looks conveying the essence of the consumptive. While her voice is rather light and one-dimensional, she does rise well to the greater moments of the drama.
Her Alfredo, Matthew Polenzani, has a fine lyric tenor voice which he uses well (although he's somewhat wooden on stage), while Zeljko Lucic as Giorgio Germont both looks and sounds good.

Headed by John Mark Ainsley in the title role, with mainly French singers in the large cast, and given here substantially in its 1739 first version, superior musically to a drastic later revision, this CD offers a superb realisation of one of Rameau's finest though lesser known operas.
It is a tale of tug-of-war between rival lovers (Ainsley and Laurent Naouri) for Iphise (Veronique Gens), overseen by Venus (Mireille Delunsch).
None of the singing can be faulted and it is a fine achievement by a company of musicians used to working together.
