Mirella made her operatic debut in Modena at 1955, at age 19, as Micaëla in Carmen.

Mirella Freni made her professional debut at the young age of twenty in her native town of Modena.
Freni never ventured far in the bel canto repertoire although she sang in ‘I Puritani’ at the Wexford Festival of 1962 and to acclaim in Rome in 1969 (with Pavarotti).
Freni’s care of her voice means that in 2003 she is still appearing, in the Russian repertoire, on the operatic stage.

PlaybillArts: Features: A Life in the Theater
On May 15 when the Met celebrates Freni's 70 years of life--50 years as an opera singer, 40 of which have been as a treasured Met artist--there will be found at the center of the stage a singer with a lustrous voice and interpretive skills that have deepened over the years rather than calcified.
Freni's gift of a gorgeous voice is complemented by her way of using words, acting, and singing to illuminate and transmit emotion.
He took Freni aside and said, "Bambina mia, you have something special not only in your voice but in the way you express yourself." Gigli told her not to sing again until she was older, or she would damage her voice.

classical music - andante - mirella freni, forever young
It is with this improbable work that Washington National Opera has chosen to open its spring 2005 season — with the 70-year-old Mirella Freni in the title role of the teen-aged Joan of Arc.
Freni has always been the textbook example of a lyric soprano who moved into dramatic roles wisely, conserving her voice so that even in her 60s she retained enough vocal freshness and bloom to remain one of the world's best Mimìs.
Freni never did and does not now fit into either of those categories, but in an acoustically lively theater like the Kennedy Center's Opera House, she has power sufficient to project the part.

Freni moved quickly to Violetta under Karajan at La Scala in 1964 and had her first set-back.
In the 1970s Freni’s repertoire extended in the theatre and on record and this recording of the Puccini and Verdi arias and duets catches her very much at her vocal peak.
This disc is an ideal complement to EMI’s ‘The Very Best of Mirella Freni’ and the issue devoted to her in Decca’s ‘Grandi Voci’ series.

Classical Net Review - Mirella Freni - A Celebration
However, Mirella Freni, who turned 70 in February 2005, celebrated by singing the role of Joan in Tchaikovsky's The Maid of Orleans in Washington D.C. – fifty years after her debut in her hometown of Modena as Micaëla! Clearly, this woman is remarkable – another Magda Olivero in terms of durability and consistent excellence.
That is because Freni recorded for other labels during this period – EMI Classics, mostly – so those who wish for a more complete portrait of her career may wish to complement this release with a compilation on another label.
Earlier in Freni's career she was primarily a lyric soprano, and even sang coloratura roles such as Elvira in Bellini's I Puritani.

Opera Today : Mirella Freni and Cesare Siepi Live in Concert
There can't be many bass arias as light and tuneful as this, and though Siepi's vocal production does give evidence of the length of his career, the handsomeness of his tone and the commanding technique more than compensate.
Freni took on the role of Don Carlos's Elisabetta around this time, and she manages the supremely challenging "Tu che le vanita" very well, but without quite the dramatic commitment to make the long selection (11 minutes) thoroughly captivating.
Soon Freni joins him as Zerlina, and their "La ci darem la mano" caps the concert beautifully, only leaving the wish that the program had included more duets.

 TIME.com: Mirella Freni Tries the Slalom -- Aug. 3, 1981 -- Page 1
Freni is familiar to American audiences from several excellent popular opera recordings—La Bohème and Madama Butterfly with Supertenor Luciano Pavarotti, Aida and Don Carlos with Tenor José Carreras, all conducted by Herbert von Karajan—as well as from films of Bohème and Butterfly shown here in 1965 and 1976.
But Freni's talent still far outshines her American reputation.
Indeed, Freni temporarily quit the stage after the birth in 1956 of her daughter Micaela, born the year after Mirella's professional operatic debut and named for her role in Bizet's Carmen.
