Ellen Miriam Hopkins was born in Bainbridge, Georgia on October 18, 1902.
Miriam wanted the coveted spot, especially when, she herself, was a Southern accented native of Georgia.
Miriam made three films in all of the 1950's, but she was making appearances in television programs during this time.

After her early tenure at Paramount, she was under contract to independent producer Samuel Goldwyn during the mid-30s and by the end of the decade had moved to Warner Brothers, where a rivalry with Bette Davis manifested itself in both the plotline and the actual filming of the touching soaper, "The Old Maid" (1939).
For a time Hopkins had been a critics' darling; as her films became more routine and she became increasingly disenchanted with her opportunities in Hollywood, some of her performances became more mannered.
Hopkins made intermittent appearances through the mid-60s, including one in Wyler's 1962 remake, "The Children's Hour" (playing the aunt of the character she had played 26 years earlier).

 VH1.com : Movies : Person : Miriam Hopkins : Biography
American actress Miriam Hopkins studied to be a dancer, but her first major opportunity with a touring ballet troupe was cut short when she broke her ankle.
Relatively charming offscreen, Hopkins could be a terror on the set, driving co-stars to distraction with her lateness, lack of concentration and self-centered attitude towards camera angles; she owned the distinction of being one of the few actors ever reprimanded in full view of the production crew by the otherwise gentlemanly Edward G. Robinson.
One of Hopkins' best later roles was her character part in 1961's The Children's Hour; 25 years earlier, Miriam had starred in the first film version of that Lillian Hellman play, These Three (1936).

Bette Davis later wrote of Hopkins' difficult manner during the production of their two films The Old Maid (1939) and Old Acquaintance (1943), saying that Hopkins was a very talented actress, but her insecurity led her to constantly try to upstage her co-stars and steal their scenes.
Hopkins was one of the actresses who auditioned to portray Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind, having one advantage that no other leading lady had: she was a native Georgian; however she did not get the part, which went to Vivien Leigh, with Paulette Goddard close behind.
Hopkins died in New York, New York from a heart attack nine days before her 70th birthday.

Hopkins might have taken the prize, following March to the Oscar stage, where (we're given to believe from Mank's commentary) the temperamental actress might have done her best to upstage her costar.
He gives us extensive background on the production, on Mamoulian, the cast (lovelorn fans of Miriam Hopkins might be aghast at the tales Mank tells of her petty on-set bitcheries), the camera work (such as how the seamless transformations were achieved), the content that was cut post-Code, and the footage reinserted for this edition.

Hopkins, who I previously have seen playing fairly harmless and airy characters in ("The Heiress") as well as endangered and misunderstood (the wrongfully accused school teacher in "These Three") really rolls up her sleeves and digs into this part with obvious relish.

Hopkins was Lubitsch's favorite actress and he is one of the few directors (William Wyler is another) who managed to harness her tendency to chew scenery.
Though Hopkins was notorious for being temperamental and difficult on the set, Lubitsch not only directed her well, but also seemed to enjoy the manic energy that arose out of her explosive personality.
