Topic: Mirkwood

Mirkwood - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mirkwood also appears in the Middle-earth fiction, as the names of two distinct forests.
Along with the rest of Beleriand this forest disappeared after the cataclysm of the War of Wrath, although part of its peaks may have survived as an island far of the coast of Lindon.
In the Lord of the Rings and associated writings, Mirkwood is used as a translation of the unknown Westron name for the great forest in Rhovanion.

Sauron established himself at the hill-fortress of Dol Guldur, and drove Thranduil and his people ever northward, so that by the end of the Third Age they were a diminished and wary people.
After Sauron is reduced to a powerless "spirit of malice" at the conclusion of the Third Age, the darkness lifts from Mirkwood, and it becomes known as the Wood of Greenleaves.
The name "Mirkwood" was not invented by Tolkien - it originates in old Norse and Germanic folklore, wherein it was used to refer to a number of anonymous magical forests.

The elves of Mirkwood boast some of the most deadly warriors in Middle Earth and are well known for their mastery of the bow and of all forms of archery.
For many, the name Mirkwood conjures up images of dank, dripping leaves and evil spider eyes, but that is not all Mirkwood is, neither is that what it was originally.
Yet for all that, the Mirkwood Elves are good people with many brave souls to their credit including the King's son, Prince Legolas who has seen many adventures both inside and outside the borders of his forest home.

Thranduil & LOTR fanfiction by Mary and Mal
The Elves felt comfortable enough to have drinking parties outdoors in the Mirkwood Forest in the middle of the night, so the spiders were either not a threat to them, or were perhaps not prevalent in the direct vicinity of the Elfking's halls with it's enchanted river.
The spiders that Bilbo and the Dwarves encountered in the Mirkwood forest were all from Mordor and were descendents of Shelob, the same spider that Frodo and Sam fought with.
Mirkwood was renamed Eryn Lasgalen, which means "Wood of Greenleaves", when Celeborn and Thranduil finally made peace, formed an alliance, and decided to share the great forest between them, after the One Ring was destroyed and the Dark Lord was overthrown.

After all, Legolas left Mirkwood with (he thought) a distressing but minor matter: the escape of a prisoner whose importance was not understood.
The pattern here is less obvious, but King Amdir of Lórien and King Oropher of Mirkwood are both Sindar princes of Silvan Elves who moved east at the same time, died in the same war, and were succeeded by sons of the same age.

I think that the spiders of mirkwood were the offspring of shelob anyway...mere shadows of her strength.
I'm not sure what are the relationships between Shelob and the Mirkwood spiders are, but I believe in LotR it is said that she is the last child of Ungoliant and her posterity has spread everywhere, including Mirkwood.
She seemed somehow more savage than the Mirkwood spiders, and she was never shown to speak, although I guess she would have had to speak to Gollum in order to work out their deal.......Its odd how much speech, or lack there of, can constitute as intelligence, in my mind anyway.

According to the Encyclopedia of Arda: Thranduil was the King of the Wood-elves who dwelt in northern Mirkwood; he fought at the Battle of Five Armies, and his son, Legolas, journeyed with Company of the Ring.
This is another possiblity, perhaps owing to the fact that Mirkwood's palace was located underground and therefore in darkness.
The text of Appendix B to The Lord of the Rings seems to imply that Thranduil was himself the founder of the kingdom of Elves in Greenwood the Great.
