Unfortunately, only two novels of Krleza's have been translated into English, which does not even come near to doing justice to the volumes of novels, stories, plays, poems and essays this multi-talented writer has produced.
Krleza far surpasses Andric, and this can be sensed in "The Return of Filip Latinovicz." I highly recommend this and esp. "On the Edge of Reason."
The early 20th century Croatian novelist Miroslav Krleza is far less well known in this country than, say, Bosnian novelist Ivo Andric or Croatian journalist and novelist Slavenka Drakulic, but reading this excellent book convinces me that he is far superior to the latter and almost in the class of the former.

Miroslav Krleza (1893-1981) is generally considered the most significant figure in Croatian literature in the 20th century -- a playwright, novelist, essayist, poet and lexicographer -- and one of the big names in Yugoslav literature.
He was born in Zagreb (then still part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire) and was sent to study at a military academy in Budapest.

Miroslav Krleza, generally considered the greatest Croatian writer of the twentieth century, was born in Zagreb on 7 July 1893.
Although an Austro-Hungarian officer, Krleza, who espoused this ideal, crossed the border and volunteered to serve in the Serbian war against the Turks in 1913.
He was subsequently arrested by the Austrians, deprived of his rank, and, after Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia in July 1914, was sent to the front as a private.
