Miroslav Tyrš, the founder of the first Sokol in Prague in 1862, continued as the most influential figure in the movement until his death in 1884.
Born Friedrich Emanuel Tirsch into a German speaking family in 1834, Tyrš grew up under the influence of the Romantic nationalism that gave rise to the uprisings that swept across Europe in 1848.
After he failed to find a position in academia, Tyrš combined his experience working as a therapeutic gymnastics trainer with the nationalist ideologies he had been exposed to in Prague: the first Sokol club was formed.

H-Soz-u-Kult / Rezensionen / Rez. EG: C.E. Nolte: The Sokol in the Czech Lands to 1914
Drawing on Miroslav Hroch’s three-stage typology of national movements, Nolte demonstrates both the new alliances and tensions inherent in the transition from elite to mass nationalism.
Born in German Tetschen (Decin), Friedrich Tirsch was inspired by the liberal Czech nationalism of 1848 and identified increasingly with the Czech national movement in the 1850s.
That Tyrs and the Sokol’s co-founder Jindrich/Heinrich Fuegner were clearly not native Czech speakers demonstrates both the malleability of national identifications in Bohemia at the time and the flexibility of the national movement itself.

Thus Tyrš brilliantly combined the education of the individual with the education of the whole - the endeavours of individuals for the maximum development within limits of their possibilities and the uniting of all through a common idea.
According to Tyrš, to achieve physical fitness it is not enough to develop one physical capability, neglecting others, such as a champion runner without strength, a strongman without agility, etc. The ideal example for Tyrš was the Greek "kalokagathia", a harmoniously balanced personality.
Tyrš does not reject records but requires that the champion engage as well in exercises and sports other than the one he excels in and thus escape the danger of onesidedness.
