Mirpur city is situated at 459 meters above sea-level and is linked with the main Peshawar-Lahore Grand Trunk road at Dina Tehsil.It is the headquarter of district Mirpur, which comprises of three sub-divisions, Mirpur,Chaksawari and Dadiyal.
Mirpur was well planned and the buildings are mostly of modern design, in addition there is significant inward investment from ex-pats now living in the UK and the Middle East.The city has sufficient number of quality hotels,restaurents,shopping malls and other urban facilities.
Mirpur is developing into an industrial city very rapidly.Foam, Polypropylene, Synthetic yarn, Motorbikes, Textile, vegetable ghee, logging and sawmills, soap, cosmetics, marble, ready-made garments, matches, rosin, turpentine and scooter industrial units have already been established in the area.

Prior to this it was a sub-division (Tehsil) of the Mirpur district.
The district is bounded by Mirpur district to the northwest, and Punjab in the west and south.
According to 1998 census, the total population of the district stands at 297,000, while its population according to 1999 projections is approximately 303,000.

In southern district - Mirpur, a large area of land (private as well as public owned) along the main irrigation canal called Upper Jhelum Canal (UJC) are observed being wasted in the form of wetland/wasteland due to the water seepage from UJC.
A number of private sector farmers at Mirpur are very much interested in fish culture but they are hesitant to take up the activity in large scale or commercial scale in lack of technical support service in the district.
To bring these enthusiastic private sector farmers of Mirpur in main stream of warm water fish culture/aquaculture as well as for the smooth implementation of the project activities also, a qualified Assistant Director,- Fisheries need to be deployed with immediate effective at Mirpur district.

The rest of the districts of Pakistani Kashmir were either in Jammu province or in the frontier province of Ladakh and are now called Northern Areas in Pakistan.

The district lies on the famous Mughal road, passing through Mirpur-Bimber-Rajouri, which was the main artery connecting the state with the rest of the country.

As the longer winter in the northern districts of AJK, the growing days are less compared to the warmer southern district, the farmer has to grow for longer periods of 18 to 24 months to produce table-size fish if he has to start culture with small sized fingerlings.
Presently, there are 16 operational private fish farms in the northern district, mostly at Muzaffarabad district, and 30 fish farms (excluding the farms established under the Suketar Project) in the southern districts of Mirpur.
The northern districts of AJK have severe cold during three months of October - March for 6 months and hot climatic conditions during the other 6 months commencing from April - September; the southern districts are instead warm and hot throughout the year.

 Blast accused sentenced to death in AJK
Muzaffarabad: A district criminal court of Azad Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday handed down capital punishment for 10 times to an accused of a deadly bomb blast in the region five years ago which had killed 10 people.
The judgment was delivered on Wednesday in the southern Mirpur town on the basis of evidence and record, the officials said.
The district criminal court, comprising district and sessions judges Abdul Rashid Salaria and district Qazi Maqboolur Rehman, held that the accused had mercilessly killed and wounded innocent people for personal gains and did not deserve any clemency.
