 Trent Dawson - Theater
The noise of an approaching plane, expertly approximated by sound designer David Budries, rumbles across the theater; the nose of the aircraft breaks through the ceiling and remains dangling onstage for the entire second act.
The accident is traditionally an opportunity for a virtuoso bit of stagecraft in "Misalliance"; it can also seem gimmicky and overwhelm the play.
In virtually every way, in fact, this "Misalliance" has been engineered for success, from Tony Straiges's splendidly sunny rendering of an Edwardian conservatory to the solidly comic performances of an ensemble that gives Shaw's memorable epigrams the crisp timing they require.

 Misalliance: a Brief Introduction
A marriage between the hereditary aristocracy and the new merchant classes--the marriage proposed between Hypatia Tarleton and Bentley Summerhays--might still be considered a "misalliance"; but it represents the consolidation of power between the classes that, for better or for worse, hold the reins of power in modern England.
The question that Misalliance poses is: "how do you live your life in the old world while waiting for the new world to come into existence?" But if that is the question, then the men of the play don't seem to hold the answers.
Tarleton (Tarleton's "Chickabiddy") may be reverting to her old lower-middle class habits and values, and may carry ideals about her husband's intellectual greatness; but at least she holds the family and the household together, looking after their emotional well-being and taking care of the drains.

 Misalliance: Some Personal Thoughts
Misalliance is set in the brilliant daylight of a country house in summer, Heartbreak House in a country house in September as the sun is setting.
In this way, Misalliance is vastly different from Granville Barker's play, The Madras House, the play that inspired Shaw to write Misalliance, which premiered in repertory with it at Charles Frohman's repertory venture at the Duke of York's Theatre in 1910.
The characters in Misalliance may fail to transform their society, to change the nature of their literal and figurative "house," or to successfully renegotiate the parent/child relationship.

The Milwaukee Chamber Theatre hired him to direct this co-production of "Misalliance," which will reopen for an extended run at the Chamber Theatre's main stage in Milwaukee later this spring when it concludes its three weeks in Madison, according to University Theatre director Norma Saldivar.
Saldivar says that the dual venues will give students involved with the production a new context for what they are learning in their classes.
In "Misalliance" she plays the pivotal role of Hypatia Tarleton, and many of Shaw's key points turn on this character.

Subtitled by the author "a debate in one sitting" (he intended for it to be performed uninterrupted, though MST has added an intermission), the comedy does indeed feel like a debate at times.

The Shaw Festival opened its 2003 season at Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, with its flagship production of Bernard Shaw's "Misalliance." It's a wordy, intellectual play that espouses Shaw's myriad opinions on various issues of his day, many of which were so advanced that they are still relevant.

Scene designer and student Brandon Ribordy created a beautifully detailed set, consisting of another "misalliance" of a stolid Grecian style stone-look facade of the house connected to the glass walls of the sunroom painted in red and green whimsical swirls.
The play centers on John Tarleton, a successful underwear salesman, free thinker and hopeless philanderer, and his daughter, the adventurous and flirtatious Hypatia, who is engaged to marry a clever but whining little twit of an aristocrat.
"Misalliance" is a light and jaunting comedy, though it does raise thoughtful and some strikingly modern questions considering its pre-World War I setting.
