I was later reassigned in Apr 54 from Misawa to Okushiri-shima Island (Detachment 29 of the 511th) off the Southwest coast of the northern most Japanese Island of Hokkaido.

I still had on civilian clothes and upon arrival an Air Policeman from the base picked up my bags to carry them for me. I told him I was only an enlisted guy and had on civilian clothes because I actually had about another day prior to officially reporting in to the unit.

Jets streaked across the skies of Misawa Saturday on a sunny, mostly clear day practicing their maneuvers, and eager Japanese festival-goers spent the night outside the base perimeter in campers and tents.
The show, say base officials, gives JASDF and U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy aircraft a chance to showcase their capabilities, which is intended to support recruiting and retention, demonstrate preparedness and promote positive community and international relations.
