Gay Marriage   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
I read a letter to the editor from a lesbian who compared the current ban on gay marriage to the now discarded ban on mixed-race marriages that used to exist in much of America.
It used to have the sinister sounding word "miscegnation" attached to the laws.
Now the miscegnation laws have been overturned for over 35 years and we wonder what the fuss was about!

Conveniently the 'full-bloods' seemed to be dying out; the part-Aborigines were to be placed in such situations that there would eventually be no traces of them.
With the 'assimilation' concept this totalitarian view of society has not been altogether lost; nor has the readiness of administrators to sacrifice the choices of the living generation for some putative gain by those yet to be born.
Obviously, except in the cases of the lighter skinned who might have a chande of equality, as it had always done: with the girls bearing whiter children, and the men often failing to find wives at all.

Intersections Review: Elizabeth Mary Holt, Colonizing Filipinas: Nineteenth-Century Representations of the Philippines ...
In this chapter, the querida [mistress]/prostitution question is discussed with the inevitable and associated health concerns and 'problems' of miscegnation.
In this chapter, I feel Holt could have referred to Anne McClintock's important text, Imperial Leather: Race, Gender and Sexuality in the Colonial Contest[2] to elucidate her material and strengthen her theoretical position.
Nevertheless, she outlines well how ambiguous domestic relations, concubinage and miscegnation were all represented as the paramount danger to health, racial purity and American power and cultural identity.

 Ex-Gay Ministries: A Dangerous Cult
When the states decided to recognize civil marriage and to bestow special privileges on married couples, it must, under the fourteenth amendment to the constitution, allow every citizen the opportunity to marry.
The US Supreme Court, when overturning the miscegnation laws (that barred fls from marrying whites) in 1968, ruled that marriage was an integral part of the pursuit of happiness.
And yet here we are 34 years later and gays are still not permitted to marry.

 Making History
While there are no laws governing marriage in the US Constitution, and the constitution specifies that issues that are not directly addressed in the constitution are issues for states to decide, marriage, like freedom of religion and the right to privacy, is a civil right, NOT a state's right.
In Loving v Virginia in 1968, the justices of the US Supreme Court, in overturning the miscegnation laws that made it illegal for fls to marry whites, said in part that the right to marry was an inherent right in the pursuit of happiness.
Let's move on, if you will, to the issue of the sanctity of marriage and the lack of desire to change the definition of marriage.

It was intended to restrict the use of Kanak and coloured labour by regulating immigration on the basis of race.
The White Australia Policy grew as much from fears about miscegnation and the moral corruption it was anticipated would follow, as well as xenophobic fears of invasion from the north, as from worries about cheap labour throwing white Australians out of work.
There is little doubt that Parliament reflected the mood and the will of the Australian people at the time.

The funniest part of his approach has been to try to apply a 1913 law making it illegal to marry out of state people if their marriage wouldn't be legal in their home state.
It was meant to stop miscegnation (that's a big word for "race mixing").

Separation of church and state demands that religiously motivated prejudices NOT become discriminatory secular laws.
Just as miscegnation laws and Jim Crow laws were morally and ethically wrong, codifying discrimination based upon sexual preference is also wrong.
Discrimination is discrimination whether it be committed against people of other ethnicities, races, sexual orientations, religions, etc. Laws should protect peoples' rights, not limit or strip them.

Robison aims to paint the liveliest and most colorful musical experience possible with as many wideranging techniques available, seemingly saying, "Oh phooey" to purist stalwarts.
Robison boldly asserts that the ends of creating the most tonally brilliant and resonant music possible are well worth the means of a little historical fibbing and instrumental miscegnation.
With the first lilting phrases of the Allegro of the Spring movement, all present were filled with langorous longing for the delights of May.  Implementation of Segregation
Like New Orleans and Charleston, Mobile had sizable numbers of "Creoles of Color" and light-skinned fls--A fact which led to a blurring of the "color line" and further complicated the enforcement of segregation.
Also, while obviously not a topic of "polite conversation" among upper-class white Mobilians, miscegnation was quite common in Mobile.
As large numbers of African-Americans relocated in Mobile during the late 1890s and early 1900s from rural south Alabama, Mississippi, and the Florida Panhandle, these new arrivals began to compete for jobs traditionally held by whites in the area.
