The metals usually occur together in minerals as their oxides (rare earths) and are somewhat difficult to separate because of their chemical similarity.
Misch metal is an alloy of the cerium metals often used in lighter flints, in alloys with other metals (especially magnesium), and to remove residual gases in the manufacture of vacuum tubes.
Individual metals may be isolated as their compounds by ion exchange methods, solvent extraction, or fractional crystallization, and chemically or electrolytically reduced to the pure metal.

 Applications
Metallic cerium is found chiefly in an alloy with iron that composes the flints used in cigarette lighters.
The metal's oxide is used in the glass of color-television tubes to increase contrast, and in lasers.
The metal is used, with small amounts of other rare earth metals, in magnesium alloys and in misch metal, an alloy used for cigarette-lighter flints and as a deoxidizer in alloys and vacuum tubes.

rare earth metal --  Britannica Concise Encyclopedia - Your gateway to all Britannica has to offer!
The rare earths themselves are pure or mixed oxides of these metals, originally thought to be quite scarce; however, cerium, the most plentiful, is three times as abundant as lead in the Earth's crust.
These metals are similar chemically because their atomic structures are generally similar; all form compounds in which they have valence 3, including stable oxides, carbides, and borides.
As purer rare-earth metals are produced, it is increasingly clear that many of their properties are extremely sensitive to small amounts of impurities.

Cerium - Cerium (Ce) Properties and Applications
It is the most abundant of the rare earth metals and is found in a number of minerals, which include allanite (also know as orthite), monazite, bastnasite, cerite and samarskite.
Metallic cerium is prepared by metallothermic reduction techniques that produce high-purity cerium.
Cerium in conjunction with other rare earth metals is used in carbon-arc lighting, which is implemented in the motion picture industry.
