  Mise-en-Scene @ Directing with Anatoly
Mise en scene is not simply the staging of the dramatic text as a repetition in time and space of the written text.
Mise en scene is not the stage equivalent of the dramatic text because it employs different signifying systems such as the corporeal, visual, aural, proxemic and kinesic systems that do not exist in the dramatic text.
With every new mise en scene, the text is placed in a situation of enunciation according to the new Social Context of its reception, which allows or facilitates a new analysis of the text and so on, ad finitum.

 Teaching mise en scene
Mise en scène is the starting point for analysis of ‘film as film’ (the title of a ‘classic’ introduction to film analysis, Perkins 1993) as distinct from film in its social context.
This extraordinary film consists of scenes shot in one take (except one) so Binoche’s disintegration in front of the camera, as she realises she’s been kidnapped, is a wonderful (and harrowing) performance.
The latter scene is particularly powerful as the boy remains in the centre of the frame (playing outside seen through the window) whilst he is being signed away; however, he is very small, indicating the degree of influence he has on proceedings.

Precarious Boundaries: Affect, Mise en scène and the Senses in Angelopoulos' Balkans Epic
Mise en scène is the critical link in the relationship between the material dimensions of cinema and its affect.
Our understanding of mise en scène is, of course, constituted in the definition of the term, and only a definition in process, that is, of the operation of mise en scène in situ, can provide a productive understanding.
However, it is only through an understanding of mise en scène which severs visual technique from the performative unfolding of a film across time, that Bordwell's study of the techniques of Angelopoulos' cinematography could yield nothing but an inventory of devices of visual style, conceived as akin to static pictorial design (27).

 Martin on Gibbs/Mise en scene
-- He summarises *mise en scène* analysis as a well-established protocol in film criticism: 'Since [Louis] Delluc, to judge a film is *always* to judge the performance of the actors, the quality of the dialogue, the beauty of the photography, the efficacy of the montage.
Throughout this scene of _Contempt_ (Chapter 5 on the superb Criterion DVD release), the shots of Camille alone, static, at a distance (accompanied by Georges Delerue's plangent score) powerfully evoke the emotional abyss between the characters, especially when we feel these shots to be from Paul's viewpoint.
*mise en scène* does not disappear in any of these filmic practices; but it evolves, sometimes violently, and the English-language classical tradition of *mise en scène* criticism has yet to face the force of that evolution, or the complexity of its modern history.

Pavis's use of the phrase the mise en scene produced by the artists is potentially confusing, in that it calls attention to a more common use of the term mise en scene, meaning 'the staging and scenography' of the production, or even 'the performance text'.
In reality it is most difficult to distinguish between text and reader, or between the performance text and the mise en scene, precisely because in order to ascertain what constitutes the performance text one has engage in a reading of it in some way.

German filmmaking in the 1920s excelled at conveying tone, meaning, and information through mise en scene.
Perhaps the most famous example of this was The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari where the doctor's internal state of mind was represented in the sets and lighting.
It has also come to represent a style of conveying the information of a scene primarily through a single shot--often accompanied by camera movement.

Mise en scène has been called film criticism's "grand undefined term," but that is not because of a lack of definitions.
The term stems from the theater where, in French, mise en scène means literally "setting in scene." When applied to the cinema, then, mise en scène refers to everything that appears before the camera and its arrangement – sets, props, actors, costumes, and lighting.
Mise en scène also includes the positioning and movement of actors on the set, which is called blocking.

 Mise-en-Scene
It means, literally, "put in the scene." For film, it has a broader meaning, and refers to almost everything that goes into the composition of the shot, including the composition itself: framing, movement of the camera and characters, lighting, set design and gen eral visual environment, even sound as it helps elaborate the composition.
Without editing to analyze what s important in a scene by cutting to a closeup of a face or an object, the viewer is required to do the looking around in the shot, to be sensitive to changes in spatial relationships and the movements of camera and actor.
Even a film that uses a lot of shots and cutting may still depend on the mise-en-scene to articulate meaning as each cut reveals a different spatial relationship.

The Straight Dope: What do artsy film critics mean by "mise-en-scene"?
Originally a theatrical term meaning a stage setting (literally, "putting-in-scene"), mise-en-scene is often loosely translated as "direction," which unfortunately tends to convey the purely mechanical notion of blocking out the actors' movements so they don't get in each other's way.
In its most significant sense, mise-en-scene refers to everything under the control of the director, that is, the aggregate effect created by art direction, placement and movement of camera and actors, lighting, and other visual elements in a given scene.
In other words, mise-en-scene is what the director does.
